ISLAND PRINCE was slow to begin (1L).
ISLAND PRINCE begun to over race approaching the turn at the 750 metres.
BEFORE MIDNIGHT (Craig Atkinson) who was inclined to hang out throughout the event hung out badly rounding the turn at the 750 metres despite the best efforts of its rider and as a result ISLAND PRINCE had to be checked. BEFORE MIDNIGHT underwent a post race veterinary examination which revealed the mare to have minor lacerations on her left hind leg.
RACE 4 – KING ISLAND MOTORCYCLES CLASS B HANDICAP – 1000 METRES
ADDED BONUS was slow to muster early speed and then tailed the field throughout the event. When questioned, Sandy Mullett rider of the gelding explained that the 1000 metres of today’s event and racing against Class B horses was not suitable for the gelding which is eligible for a maiden. Ms Mullett also stated that ADDED BONUS was only entered in the event today to ensure the race could be programmed with sufficient starters. ADDED BONUS underwent a post race veterinary examination with the veterinary surgeon unable to report any obvious abnormalities.
RACE 5 – VIC HILL MEMORIAL CLASS B HANDICAP – 1800 METRES
The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Trainer Jim Taylor made application to the stewards that his gelding APPAROS was denied a fair start. After taking evidence from Mr Taylor, rider Casey Bruce, the starter and viewing the official replays stewards were of the opinion that APPAROS reared simultaneously to the gates opening and then reared again and as a result missed the start by approximately 12 lengths as a result of its own behaviour. APPAROS was therefore declared a starter and correct weight was declared.
DARCEY’S STAR underwent a pre race veterinary examination after becoming fractious in the barriers and was passed fit to start.
I’MSINGINGTHEBLUES was slow to begin (5L)
APPAROS underwent a post race veterinary examination with the veterinary surgeon reporting that the gelding was lame in the near fore knee. Trainer Jim Taylor has been advised that he must submit a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to APPAROS racing again.
RACE 6 – BOAGS CLASS B HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
JISUBANI underwent a pre race veterinary examination in the stabling area after it was noted that the gelding was short stepping with the off hind leg, JISUBANI was again examined behind the barriers after the preliminary and was passed fit to start. JISUBANI underwent a post race veterinary examination with the veterinary surgeon unable to report any obvious abnormalities.
DULANI hung out rounding the home turn carrying SERENGETI MISS wider on the track.
Stewards queried trainer Ron Crack in regards to the improved performance of MARKOV in today’s event. Mr Crack explained that whilst he was surprised at today’s result MARKOV looked well in the coat today and had been freshened up during the week and may have appreciated racing over the 1200 metres. Post race swab samples were taken from MARKOV.
RACE 7 – JBS AUSTRALIA TROPHY HANDICAP – 1400 METRES
The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jason Lowe, rider of the second place getter TYRO GODDESS wished to view the official photo finish, after doing so Jason Lowe was satisfied and correct weight was declared.
YABUSAME was slow to begin (2L).
GENERAL
King Island Race Club - Saturday, 25 January 2014 - Race
Stewards today inquired into the reasons why DEEP WELLS (Sandy Mullett) was checked by its rider approaching the 1200 metres. Sandy Mullett explained that DEEP WELLS was over racing due to the slow pace of the race and was not responding to being restrained. At the time that APPAROS (Casey Bruce) moved in advance of the gelding and towards the rail Ms Mullett was then successful in restraining the gelding and lost 2 lengths. Ms Mullett stated that APPAROS did not have a bearing on DEEP WELLS being checked and believed that there was sufficient room for APPAROS to cross down to the rail. As the official replay of the incident was not clear Stewards accepted the evidence of Ms Mullett and reminded Ms Bruce of her obligations to ensure she is 2 clear lengths ahead when crossing.
