Key Points

o  Each runner runs the base circuit in three stages, and a full circuit includes three runners running separate stages.

o  It is a good conditioning drill, but mostly it prepares them to run the bases properly and with a mission.

Relay Drill
Purpose
Base running to all bases & conditioning.
Equipment:
field, bases, helmets, 2 balls
Procedure

·  Split players up equally at 1st and 3rd bases.

·  Each team (at 1st and 3rd) has a baseball.

·  The coach stands at the pitcher’s mound and signals for the relay to start. Once started, the first player at each of the bases begins running in sequence along the base paths. 1st – 2nd – 3rd – home – 1st and 3rd – home – 1st – 2nd – 3rd.

·  The ball is then “handed” to the next player in the relay line.

·  This continues until all players have run the bases. The team back to the original base after going through all runners is the winner.

·  If uneven teams, the first runner for one team may need to run twice.
