Concept Note on “Summer Camp Gathering for East Asia Red Cross Youth members”

Background

With the ever increasing global temperature, followed by rising sea levels, extreme winter conditions and frequent natural disasters; climate change has become one of the most challenging issues of human kind. In 2015, nearly half of the disasters recorded globally occurred in Asia. The Asian region bears 42% of the global financial impact, 83% of the global disaster mortality, and 86% of the affected people in disasters[1].

It will be children and youth, the next generation, who will bear the adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters and extreme weather events. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 highlights “Children and youth as agents of change”. It is therefore important to recognize children and youth as equal contributors to DRR, responding to disasters and building resilience. As the climate change crossed the borders of nations posing a threat internationally, it is not a responsibility of a country alone, rather an equal responsibility of all the countries in a region and countries of the world.

Increased awareness, strengthened cooperation and shared efforts for mitigating climate change will lead to DRR and resilience building among the youth.

Therefore, Summer camp Gathering for East Asia Red Cross Youth” will be organized between 24-28th of July, 2017 under the theme “Mitigation of climate change impacts and Resilience building”. This camp gathering will be conducted under the umbrella of the global initiative “One billion coalition for community resilience”.

Main Objectives

  • Raise awareness on emergency preparedness
  • Provide knowledge of climate change adaptation to East Asian youth members
  • Strengthening the international friendship among East Asian National Societies youth members

In this concept note, MRCS would like to propose a Summer camp gathering for East Asia Red Cross Youth on mitigation of climate change impacts and resilience building.

Intended Outcomes

Increased awareness of climate change, its impacts and mitigation methods in relation to ongoing DRR among East Asian youth

Participants will begin to take a major role in sensitising society and create increased awareness of climate change;

Peer to peer cross learning by experience sharing ad active learning;

Keytake home messages will be developed for implementing in respective NS youth programs.

Language

The main language for the camp gathering will be English. Language barrier of the participants could be a challenge because our programme language will be English which none of the countries’ native language is. Therefore the basic requisite for this camp gathering will be participants who are able to communicate in English. For every 10 participants, an English-speaking volunteer from Mongolian Red Cross Youth will be attended.

Methodology

Classroom setting lectures will be followed by active group discussion and group work. There will also be opportunity for exercising their group work in the field. Interactive method will be used to encourage creative thinking and problem solving skills for youth.

90East Asia Red Cross Youth members. From which:

  • 30 members and staffs from Mongolian Red Cross Society
  • 26 members, 4 staffs from Korean Red Cross Society
  • 8 Members, 2 staffs from Japanese Red Cross Society
  • 8 Members, 2 staffs from Red Cross Society of China
  • 8 Members, 2 staffs from Red Cross Society of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

*note: staff- full time employed in youth department of NS

Selection criteria

  • East Asia Red Cross Youth members age13 - 18 as of July, 2017.
  • Gender balance will be taken into consideration ensuring equal participation of girls and boys.
  • At least one year of experience with respective national society
