The Gay Rights Movement, 1951-1976, Mattachine Society of New York, 24 reels, HC 6120 USA, located in microfilm reading room
The organizational papers of The Mattachine Societyreflect the vigorous debate that took place among itsmembers from the time of its foundation in 1950. Thefirst major gay organization in the United States, theSociety sponsored discussion groups, encouraged supportfor civil rights and opposed police entrapment forsexual acts. The Society’s New York chapter, founded in 1955,became the largest gay rights group in the U.S. From1965 onwards, it fought to establish the civil rights ofgays, defended men arrested on morals charges andprotested against the continual police practice of harassingpeople in gay bars. These papers offer a poignant portrayal of the gay rightsmovement, through correspondence with gay men andlesbians throughout the United States, as well as theminutes of meetings, memoranda and ephemera.
