South Carolina Association of Agricultural Educators

Executive Committee

Minutes

Sandhill REC

March 1, 2007

Members present: Roger Estridge, President; Barry Hawkins, Sec/Treasurer; Melanie Birchmore, Piedmont Region Vice-President; Derrick Cooper, Mid State Region Vice-President; and Chris Corzine, state staff. In the absence of a quorum, no action was finalized.

-Roger Estridge called the meeting to order.

- The Treasurer’s report was given by Barry Hawkins. The account balance is $8,886.44.

- Barry Hawkins requested that the monies collected for WLC be deposited and disbursed through the SCAAE account. All present were in agreement.

- Barry Hawkins requested that SCAAE contribute $150 toward the WLC trip for the S.C. winner of the National FFA WLC Scholarship. This would ensure that the cost of the trip is covered in its entirety. All present were in agreement.

- Barry Hawkins requested that SCAAE provide a complimentary state membership to any member that had a Retired Lifetime Membership in NAAE. He felt that this would possibly keep the retired educators involved with SCAAE at a cost of less than a dollar per year to the organization.

- Barry Hawkins presented the list of SCAAE Award Winners for 2007.

The winner of the John Parris Outstanding Service Award needs to be selected.

Two nominations have been made: Senator Danny Verdin of Laurens County and County Councilman Larry Greer of Anderson County. If anyone has other nominations, notify Barry Hawkins or Roger Estridge. One will be selected after regional meetings.

- Chris Corzine presented an update on the status of funding for the CAERT material. It is on the agenda for the House of Representatives, but not on the agenda for the Senate. Billy Keels has requested that we contact members of the Senate Finance Committee. He can assist with the drafting of a letter and has contact information for the members of the Finance Committee.

- Roger Estridge mentioned that the FFA rosters are a headache to complete. Chris mentioned that teachers can contact himself, Steve Sanderson, or Brenda Baldwin for help if we need it.

- Chris Corzine presented some concerns about the annual conference.

1. Cost of the conference has been $70, and some teachers wanted to know what this covered. The banquet, meals, meeting rooms and other expenses usually run about $35 per person. The remainder of the money has been used to cover yearly expenses in lieu of raising the dues. It was suggested that conference registration should be sent to Charlotte Swafford at Clemson. This was discussed. This was the procedure in the past with the money being sent to Clemson and then to SCAAE Treasurer, which made it hard to keep track of it.

2. Have Brenda Baldwin handle the plaques, trophies, and certificates. Barry Hawkins agreed to keep doing this since he has made all the contacts, but felt that Brenda may be able to do a better job with the certificates.

3. Have the Secretary/Treasurer’s office be divided into two offices with the Secretary elected at large and would serve for four years and could be re-elected. The group present agreed to keep the offices the way that they are at the present time.

4. There was discussion on presenting teachers who have served 25 years a plaque and one be given at five-year intervals. All present were in agreement.
