Job Description
Bar Staff
Responsible to: Bars Manager reporting to on duty supervisor
Salary: £7.50 per hour paid plus Holiday pay, paid fortnightly
Hours of Work:Up to 12 hours a week based on a flexible rota
Place of Work:Bar staff are employed to work principally at Sparrows Farm Bar (Avery Hill). It may be necessary, however, to work at alternative campus bars on occasion
Description of Duties
Bar staff are responsible for the preparation and service to customers, of food and beverage products, in line with the relevant service standards and procedures. In addition, to maintain a clean, tidy, and safe environment within the bar areas at all times.
Basic Role
- To provide a bar service for customers.
- To serve food, take orders, and carry out general catering duties such as the preparation and cooking of food.
- Setting up the bar as required, closing it down and clearing the venue at the end of the business day. (in conjunction with stewards)
- To ensure customers are treated with courtesy, respect and fairness at all times, providing help and assistance where required.
- To undertake training and attend staff meetings as required, taking ownership of their induction and continual development in the working environment. Further details of responsibilities can be found in SUUG Training Manuals
Adherence to the Law and Venue Policy
- To adhere at all times, to Basic Food Hygiene and Health & Safety practices.
- To ensure licensing law is adhered to at all times, including service times, and the refusal of service of alcohol to anyone under 18 or intoxicated.
- To ensure the correct measures of product are served in accordance with the law and house policies. To know and observe the correct standards,ingredients, serving methods, and vessels etc for all products; pro-actively seeking training if required.
Cash and Stock Control
- To ensure the correct prices are charged for all products.
- To ensure the security of Union property at all times, ensuring that the correct cash handling procedures are adhered to.
- To report all operational concerns, equipment faults, and other relevant issues to the Bars Management in an appropriate and timely manner.
- To actively control wastage of all products: food, drink & sundries.
General Duties
- To clean and maintain service areas, including surfaces and equipment, working under delegation and own initiative.
- To collect, wash & put away glassware and food utensils, maintaining a constant supply to provide a fast service to customers; collecting & disposing of bottles.
- To clean and maintain cellar and storage areas, in line with Health & Safety requirements and bar standards and procedures.
- To re-stock as necessary ensuring the constant cleanliness of shelves, refrigerators and associated storage areas.
- To carry out other duties as may be reasonable in line with this role.
Adherence to Students’ Union Policy
- To maintain a high standard of personal presentation and hygiene, appropriate to a food & beverage business; to wear the uniform provided at all times when working, but not when off-duty.
- To act at all times in accordance with the Students’ Union policy on Equal Opportunities and ensure that this is enshrined in the activities of the bar.
- To demonstrate appropriate levels of conduct and behaviour on Union premises or at Union events whilst NOT on duty.
