POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Trail Crew Member
Supervisor: Climbing Ranger
Wage: $9.00 per hour
Hours: 860 hours
Start: May 18, 2009
End: October 2, 2009
Schedule: 40-hour weeks, generally 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays
Purpose:
To maintain approximately 40 miles of foot, horse, and bicycle trails in City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park; to protect natural resources through erosion mitigation, and to enhance visitor safety and enjoyment by providing safe and attractive trails.
Duties:
1. Build and maintain rock and wooden retaining walls, waterbars, check dams, stairs, bridges, and other trail structures
2. Use and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools including, but not limited to; chainsaw, shovel, Pulaski, pick, reciprocating saw, hammer drill, sledge hammer, rock bar, wheelbarrow etc.
3. Create and install trail signs
4. Ensure that proper safety equipment is used at all times
5. Engage the public, provide information and assistance as appropriate
6. Represent the National Park Service and Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation to the visiting public in a professional manner
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Legal U.S. resident,18 years old or older, with valid driver’s license
2. High School Diploma
3. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain, occasionally alone, especially in the backcountry
4. Ability and willingness to perform heavy manual labor
5. Ability to take and give direction, learn, and provide thoughtful input on trail projects
6. Ability to hike long distances with heavy loads
