Project Description
The Michigan Municipal League Foundation is pleased to present an essay contest for high schoolstudents (ages 15-18) to stimulate interest in local government and public service. The winners will receive an expense paid trip to the National League of Cities’ (NLC)Congress of Cities conference in Seattle, Washington, November 13 – 16, 2013. The winners will have the opportunity to participate in many youth delegate workshops and network with public officials from around the country.
The contest is designed to give students an opportunity to use their knowledge and experience to creatively voice their views on what they value in their community and how it can be improved.
The essay topic is: “If you were an elected official (i.e. councilmember/mayor/village president) how would you improve the quality of life in your community?”
The deadline for submission isAugust 1, 2013. The winners will receive notice byAugust 30, 2013.
Eligibility
The essay contest is open to all Michigan students (ages 15-18) currently interested in local government and public service. The winners must be accompanied by an adult. The scholarship fund will contribute $500 towards the accompanied adult’s expense.
•Essays must not exceed 500 words.
•Only one essay may be submitted per student.
•An official entry form must be filled out and submitted with essay.
Judges/Criteria
The essays will be judged by the Michigan Municipal League Foundation Board’s scholarship committee. Essays will be judged on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar and spelling.
Award
The winning students will be reimbursed for 100% of their expenses(upon submission of travel receipts for mealsand transportation) paid to the NLC Congress of Cities conference in Seattle, Washington, November 13 – 16, 2013. The winners must be accompanied by an adult. The scholarship fund will reimburse up to $500 towards the accompanied adult expenses upon submission of travel receipts. The scholarship is funded by the Dennis Archer Scholarship Fund, administered by the Michigan Municipal League Foundation. Information will be mailed to Michigan school districts, NLC member cities and villages,and posted on the League’s website at
Deadline
