Training

Explanation: TheCAOapplicable to PhD candidates state that a training plan is required. The PhD candidate, first supervisor and Dean of PhD Studies collectively indicate in the tables below what the training should includein any case. At a later stage, the PhD candidate can keep track of the actual courses, conferences, etc. that s/he has attended in a copy of the training plan. If required, the training and supervision plan can be modified or supplemented at a later stage.

The trainingto which the PhD candidate, the supervisors and the Faculty commit consists of four elements:

  1. Gaining experience (in carrying out research, in writing about this research, in teaching and in other academic activities);
  2. Supervision by the thesis supervisor and any other supervisors;
  3. Learning from other researchers (and possibly practicing lawyers) in Leiden, elsewhere in the Netherlands and in the world;
  4. Following seminars, courses, training, etc.

In so far as no other divergent agreements are made within this Training and Supervision Plan regarding these four elements, the text of this model applies in full, as does the Standard Time Schedule as applicable to the position of PhD candidate, which can be found at

In the context of elements a and c in particular, the PhD candidate is expected to actively participate in the research meetings of the following networks, among others:

  • The above-mentioned faculty research programme and the relevant sub-programme
  • The department where the PhD candidate is appointed
  • The Promoclub which the PhD candidate is expected to form with approximately five other PhD candidates

The costs of participating in these networks will in first instance be deducted from the personal travel and workshop budget of the PhD candidateor PhD fellow (from the material budget of the scientific institute).

The PhD candidate is further responsible for mentioning his or her research on his or her Dutch or English staff member page on the Faculty website. In addition, the PhD candidate is responsible for communicating directly all personal details anddetails regarding his or her PhD research to the Netherlands Research Database ((NOD)

Thecourse component of the training (d) consists of three parts (see below), with a total scope of 30 EC.

  1. General academic part of the training

Supervision

In accordance with point D1 of the ‘Rules and Policies’ as applicable to the position of PhD candidate, the first supervisor is expected to speak with the PhD candidate at least twice a month in the first year, and thereafter at least once a month. The co-supervisor is expected to speak with the PhD candidate at least once every two months in the first year, and thereafter at least once every quarter. The PhD candidate is therefore entitled to at least two hours of personal supervision a month (see Article 6.8, third paragraph, under c,CAO).
