Course Description:Clinical education is an important component of the academic programs of student physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. This course will provide participants with key updates regarding the organizational entities responsible for clinical education, clinical education terminology and resources for clinical educators.The importance of incorporating interprofessional collaboration experiences in the clinical environment will be discussed. This course will also meet the State of Michigan re-licensure requirements of Pain and Human Trafficking education by updating clinicians about the most recent evidenced based pain interventions and assist the Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant and other Healthcare providers, in identifying Human Trafficking and best practice in pain management.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course the attendees will:
1)Explain the role of the Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant in the role of pain management.
2) Identify signs of Human Trafficking within the role of a Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
3) Describe Interprofessional Education (IPE)and identify why interprofessional collaboration as an intentional component to a clinical experience isrecommended
4) Understand the various groups and consortia responsible for clinical education, the new national clinical education terminology, and the various web-based resources for clinical educators.
Course Instructors:
Beth Black PT, MS, DSc is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education for the Physical Therapy Program at Oakland University. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Science from McMaster University, and a Doctor of Science from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Beth was a Clinical Instructor and Center Coordinator of Clinical Education at Toronto General Hospital and the Director of Physical Therapy at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario prior to joining the faculty at Oakland University. Her clinical area of scholarly inquiry is health promotion and wellness practice. She has published several articles and textbook chapters and taught courses on this topic for the professional association at the local, state and national levels. Her other area of research is in instructional design and clinical education. Beth has carried out and published research on teaching approaches such as the use of standardized patients in the classroom to prepare students for clinical experiences and student/CI matching to optimize clinical education outcomes.
SarahCaseis a physical therapist with 15 years of experience treating patients with chronic pain. She completed her MPT in 2002 at Oakland University and the DScPT in 2009 with a focus on Complementary Medicine and Wellness. Dr. Case conducted research in the area of practitioner’s attitudes and beliefs toward patients with chronic pain. She is a member of the Midwest Pain Society and is currently Department Chair and Program Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Baker College Auburn Hills. Dr. Case is also a Fellow of the APTA/ACAPT Education Leadership Institute (ELI).
Jake Jakubiak: Kathleen “Jake" Jakubiak Kovacek, PT (please call her Jake) graduated from Wayne State University Physical Therapy Program and has been a practicing physical therapist for 41 years. Jake spent 27 years in hospital systems in both clinical and management roles; the past 14 years she has and continues to be part of a physical therapist owned private practice.
Jake is currently a part time faculty member for the Physical Therapy Programs at Oakland University, Wayne State University and University of Michigan Flint.
Jake has served in numerous roles for the APTA and MPTA over the years, including past MPTA President. She currently is the MPTA liaison to the Board of Physical Therapy.
Jake has been an invited Speaker at national physical therapy and state conferences numerous times over the past three decades and has been a contributing author on three textbooks on PT management.
Martha Schiller, PT, DPT, MSAis an Assistant Professor (Clinical) and the Director of Clinical Education for the Physical Therapy Program at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan. She has held many positions in the clinical and academic environments, including Physical Therapist, Clinical Instructor, Center Coordinator for Clinical Education, Team Leader, Supervisor and Director. She has been a trainer for the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program for 20 years and teaches the basic and advanced courses to clinicians. Martha graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a BSc in PT (1986), Central Michigan University with a MS in Administration (1993), and the University of St. Augustine with a DPT (2007). She is the PT faculty coordinator for the WSU SAY Detroit Physical Therapy Clinic, the Diabetes Education & Wellness (DEW) Clinic and Community Homeless Inter-professional Program (CHIP), all student-run pro bono clinics. One of her research interests include inter-professional collaboration in a team environment
Susan Tomica is a physical therapist with 22 years of experience treating patients in the outpatient orthopedic and acute care settings. Dr. Tomica completed her MSPT in 1995 at Washington University in St. Louis and transitional DPT in 2016 at Temple University. She currently serves as Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education and teaches Neurological Foundations of Motor Control in the PTA Program at Baker College of Auburn Hills with previous experience as Clinical Co-Lecturer and Lab Instructor for Neuroanatomy at Oakland University
