Description and Content
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.
The seventh grade AVID Elective course is a continuation of the AVID philosophy. Students will develop awareness of the values accompanying academic goals and success. The course will focus on building self-confidence and communication skills in working with peers and adults. Students will be exposed to reading strategies that will assist in vocabulary building and understanding a variety of texts, and will also focus on prewriting techniques, summary writing and structural components of note-taking. The students will increase college and career awareness through guest speaker presentations, field trip opportunities and research.
Grading
Academic grades are based on proficiency of standards (learning logs, binder checks, TRFs and select standards-based assignments), which will show how well your student understands the concepts. This grade will be their “Skills” grade. The percentage of points earned will be assigned a letter grade as follows:
A 90%-100%
B 80%-89%
C 70%-79%
D 60%-69%
F below 60%
A work habits grade will be earned based on the quality and completion of class work and homework, as well as participation in class. A citizenship grade will be earned based on behavior and the number of tardiness per six week grading period. The “Work Habits” and “citizenship” grades will be assigned as follows:
O Outstanding
S Satisfactory
N Needs Improvement
U Unsatisfactory
Assignments
Students are expected to have all work completed and ready to hand in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. All work is to be turned in on time.
Behavior Standards
All members of the classroom community are expected to act in a respectful manner. I enforce a safe classroom environment where I am able to teach and students are able to learn. I plan to make interventions where students are interrupting others’ right to learn or creating an unsafe environment.
