Guidelines & Application Form for

“New Initiative” Grant

As well as small SA Community Grants of up to $2,500, the SA National Science Week Coordinating Committee is offering special funding of $15,000 for one event that would classify as a New Initiative.

National Science Week is Australia's largest national festival which aims to raise the profile and increase public awareness of the importance of science, technology and innovation in our society.

National Science Week for 2016 will be held from 13 to 21 August.

Aims of National Science Week:

§  To encourage informed discussion around science-related issues of public interest

§  To encourage young people to study science

§  To promote science-based careers

§  To inform businesses of the importance of innovation to their long-term success

§  To celebrate the achievements of Australians working in these fields.

As a partnership program between a number of Government departments and other organizations and institutions, National Science Week demonstrates the significance of a community approach to highlighting the importance of science.

Objectives

This New Initiatives Grant is open to community groups, organisations, and businesses to help celebrate science.

The grant should assist in bringing science to an increasing number of South Australians.

In particular, the Grants Committee Panel will be looking for an initiative that is new to South Australia and which will attract previously untapped audiences.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a grant, you must be:

§  a community group,

§  an organisation,

§  a business, or

§  an industry, industry body or university

NOTE: Schools are unable to apply for the South Australian Community Grants. However they may apply for small grants through SASTA for school-based projects.

Target Audience

This New Initiative Grant is primarily for an activity or event that involves the general public; however it may also target business and industry.

A project, activity or event that aligns with the aims of the STEM strategy will be considered favourably.

South Australia is embarking on a future built upon innovation and knowledge-intensive industries, and attaining this goal will require highly-skilled citizens. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Skills Strategy outlines policy and program priorities for developing a workforce with strong skills in STEM, as well as the creativity and entrepreneurship skills that empower individuals to take their ideas through to commercial success.

You might consider an event in metropolitan, regional or remote areas and/or those aimed at marginalised groups such as those who:

are on low incomes, unemployed or underemployed

have limited access to resources to meet developmental needs

lack self-esteem, education, knowledge, life management skills

are members of special needs target groups.

Events

Organising an event during National Science Week has benefits including:

§  inspiring people to pursue an interest or career in science

§  extending your professional network and partnership opportunities

§  encouraging community participation and feedback

§  attracting new members or audiences

§  sharing your achievements and your knowledge with the Australian public or the local community.

Your activity or event must meet at least one of the aims of National Science Week mentioned above, and you are encouraged to include innovative ways to bring science to new audiences. These may include but are not limited to:

·  hands-on science workshops

·  career seminars

·  science fairs

·  science through the arts activities

Event Dates

National Science Week will be held from 13-21 August 2016 although, in SA, events tend to take place throughout August.

Preference will be given to events that will be held between these dates. Events that fall a few days either side of these dates may also be eligible.

Funding Available

Eligible organisations may apply for a New Initiatives Grant of $15,000 for a project to be delivered during or close to National Science Week.

Funds may be used for direct project delivery. Examples of funds supported include:

§  Resources and materials related to the event

§  Hire of equipment / venue

§  Presenter / speaker fees

§  Limited advertising when it is clearly needed for a particular purpose. (Advertising can generally be achieved through the National Science Week web site, state brochures, resources, posters, etc.)

The funding may not be used for projects of the following nature:

§  research projects

§  conferences

§  curriculum development

§  infrastructure

§  surveys

§  teacher training

§  payment of wages or salaries

§  software development.

§  the supply of refreshments for audiences at the funded event.

It should be noted that infrastructure and support costs associated with ongoing activities, such as general administration and salaries, are the absolute responsibility of the event promoter.

If your event is focused solely on careers, consider if you might better achieve your objective by participating in the careers day of Science Alive, a day specifically for students from Years 7 to 12, with approximately 5,000 students participating each year. Note that the Community grants are not intended to fund the cost or resources, etc of participation in Science Alive.

Selection Process

A selection committee from the National Science Week (SA) Coordinating Committee will assess all applications and determine which project will be funded.

Selection is based on the written information provided by the applicant.

In some instances the selection committee may request further information before making its final decision.

What Grants Committee will be looking for

Before applying for the New Initiatives Grant, it is most important that you ensure your event is novel, and different from previous and existing events held in National Science Week.

The Grants Committee panel will be looking for an event that:

·  Makes a worthwhile contribution to the understanding of science

·  Sets in action an activity that may have the potential to be the genesis of something bigger in the future

·  Is broadly inclusive

·  Covers a wide age range

·  Does not compete for the same audiences as existing events

·  Is genuinely related to science and is not specific to a club or organisation

·  Is a collaboration

·  Is a co-investment (either financial or in-kind)

Requirements for Grant Application

Each grant application must comprise a fully completed grant application form (below).

An evaluation report will be required within 8 weeks of the completion of the project. The evaluation will include details of the event, itemized expenditure of funds, attendance numbers, and the success of the event in meeting the aims of National Science Week. Details of evaluation tools will be provided to the successful applicant.
