APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF ENGINEERING EXAMINATION

The following instructions have been prepared to assist you in completing your application for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) examination. Proper attention to details will help avoid delays in processing and will expedite final review of your application. Failure to completely and properly fill out the application form will not only cause delays but may result in the inability to qualify you for the PE exam.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY

Applicants must be:

  • Those who have been awarded a Bachelors of Science, Masters, or Ph.D., degree in engineering; and
  • Individuals who have taken and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination; and
  • A resident of Japan. Japanese nationality is not required; and
  • Have a minimum of four (4) years of progressive engineering experience subsequent to receiving your bachelor’s degree (see attached description of acceptable experience).

PROCESSING OF APPLICATIONS

Through an agreement between the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and the Japan PE/FE Examiners Council (JPEC), eligible candidates will complete and file their applications and exam-related fees with JPEC. JPEC will provide assistance to candidates as needed to complete the applications. Candidates who are deemed to be eligible by JPEC for seating for the PE exam will be directed to complete an NCEES Web-based registration form for the specified exam. The candidates will pay the required exam fee to NCEES during the Web-based registration using a VISA or MasterCard credit card. Qualified candidates will be notified in writing and will be provided specific information concerning the date, time, and location of the exam administration, along with additional information concerning materials that will be allowed in the exam room and procedures that will be observed. Candidates not qualified to take the exam will be notified in writing and be advised of any noted deficiencies. A copy of your college transcript reflecting the degree that was awarded must be provided with your application. The transcript must be translated into English.

Candidates will be required to submit to JPEC an application fee associated with the evaluation of applications and qualification of candidates.

Exam Fee:

During the NCEES Web-based registration process, candidates will be required to submit to NCEES anamount equal to US$400 via VISA or MasterCard credit card. This fee will be inclusive of all expenses associated with the exam site and exam administration; and the exam books and exam scoring.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Application materials and the required fees must be submitted to JPEC no later than January 10 for the spring exam administration and July 31 for the fall exam administration.

EXAM RESULTS

NCEES will provide each candidate with electric notification of ahis/her exam results. Printed NCEES certificate will not be available any more,however candidate can check, print or transfer the exam results through a “verifiable link” of “My NCEES”.This information will be retained by NCEES and available for confirmation through “verifiable link” of “My NCEES”. All exam results scores will be reported as pass/fail and no numerical scores will be provided.

Progressive Engineering Experience – The following describes engineering experience that is deemed to be acceptable in qualifying to apply the Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) as defined in the NCEES Model Rules:

  1. Experience must be progressive on engineering projects to indicate that it is of increasing quality and requiring greater responsibility.
  1. Only work of an engineering nature which follows graduation is creditable.
  1. Experience gained in the military, to be creditable, must be of a character equivalent to that which would have been gained in the civilian sector doing similar work. Normally, it would be expected that the applicant, while in the military, served in an engineering or engineering-related group.
  1. Experience should be gained under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer or, if not, an explanation should be made showing why the experience should be considered acceptable. Experience gained under the technical supervision of an unlicensed individual may be considered if the appropriate credentials of the unlicensed supervisor are submitted to the board.
  1. For sales experience to be creditable, it must be demonstrated that engineering principles were required and used in gaining the experience.
  1. Teaching experience, to be creditable, must be in engineering or engineering related courses at an advanced level in a college or university offering an engineering program of 4 years.
  1. Experience gained in engineering research and design projects by members of an engineering faculty.
  1. Successful completion of graduate study leading to the master’s degree in engineering which has followed a baccalaureate degree in engineering may be used for credit for 1 year’s experience. If the Ph.D. in engineering is completed under the same conditions, 2 years’ total experience may be credited. The 2 years’ credit includes the 1 year for the master’s degree. If the Ph.D. is obtained without the master’s degree, the credit for experience may be 2 years.

9. Experience may not be anticipated. The experience must have been gained by thetime of the application.

  1. Experience in construction, to be creditable, must demonstrate the application of engineering principles.
  1. Experience should include demonstration of knowledge of engineering mathematics, physical and applied science, properties of materials, and the fundamental principles of engineering design.
  1. Experience should include demonstration of the application of engineering principles in the practical solution of engineering problems.
