  1. Background, subject and objectives of the competition

Alfredo Macam Yao’s humble beginnings and entrepreneurial vision led to the establishment of the country’s leading beverage brand, Zest-O Corporation. With his innovative spirit and innate creativity, Mr. Yao was awarded the Most Admired ASEAN Enterprise for Innovation at the first ASEAN Business Awards in 2007. Putting innovation and research and development in high premium, Mr. Yao shallcontinue to inspire the Filipino people through his story of perseverance and determination.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), in cooperation with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, launched the Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property Awards (AMY National IP Awards) in 2009, in furtherance of its advocacy to promote appreciation and application of locally-developed and socially-relevant intellectual properties and to support its development and commercialization.

The AMY IP Awards has been conferred to Filipino-owned intellectual properties from the inventor’s community, the academe, and entrepreneurs.

The AMY National IP Award shall be awarded to Filipino-owned intellectual properties that have contributed or have the potential to contribute to economic development and social awareness. They can be an individual ora group of individuals.This year, the AMY IP Award is split into two categories: Collegiate and Professional.

The AMY IP Awards provides a venue to intellectual properties to be presented to potential investors and propel their commercialization. It recognizes inventors, entrepreneurs, and students who contribute to the development of innovative and creative new products and services that make doing business productive and economical.

To be eligible for the awards, a nominatedintellectual property must be able to submit the following requirements and meet the following criteria:

  1. Criteria

To be eligible for the Awards, an intellectual property must be apatentable technology or subject matter, meeting the following criteria:

1)Has been certified novel by way of a patent search conducted by an Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) or by IPOPHL through the grant of letters patent or a registrability report for a Utility Model;

2)The products or services applying the intellectual property has commercial potential;

3)Will solve an existing problem of society or contribute to the development of the local community; and

4)Is environmentally sound and sustainable.

5)Patentable

In this year’s competition, there will be two main categoriesin which a specific entry may fall;

  • Collegiate level – entries which are outputs of undergraduate students;
  • Professional level – entries which are outputs of postgraduate researchers/students or university researchers; or individual inventors

The following prizes will be given to two winners of each category:

III.Procedure/Mechanics

1)Individuals or group of individuals must submit an accomplished registrationform, accompanied by a patent search report showing the novelty of the invention conducted by an ITSOor any proof of novelty from IPOPHLsuch as certificate of letters patent or a registrability report for a Utility Model, and other materials (e.g. brochures, additional documents), if any, supporting their entry. All documents shall be contained in a sealed envelope upon submission to PCCI along with a soft-copy stored in a CD (if not in CD, soft-copy must be sent via email to )addressed to Ms. Cheska Alvarez of the PCCI Secretariat at:

Deadline for submission of nominations is 12 August 2016.

2)All completed entries submitted on or before 12 August 2016 will undergo a pre-screening evaluation to be conducted by IPOPHL.

3)All completed entries that passed the pre-screening evaluation will be called on to make a presentation of their entriesbefore the AMY IP Awards 2016 Panel of Judges. The panel of judges shall be composed of the following:

a)2 representatives of the PCCI;

b)1 representative of IPOPHL; and

c)1representative of Department of Science and Technology(DOST)

d)1 IP practitioner

6)The panel of judges shall make their decisions based on the following selection criteria:

a)Uniqueness and originality of intellectual property (20 points)

b)Readiness for commercialization (40 points)

c)Impact and benefits to society

  • Environmental impact (10points)
  • Social impact (20 points)

d)Demonstration/ presentation (10 points)

Total= 100 points

IV.Rules

1)Individuals or a group of individuals may submit multiple entries. The entries may be the work of the same people.

2)Participation in the competition does not waive nor transfer the intellectual property rights of the owners. All persons involved in the judging and administration of the competition shall sign a non-disclosure statement to insure that there will be no prejudicial disclosure of the intellectual property yet to be filed for protection after the competition. However, titles of winning entries may be publicized.

3)Entries submitted shall not be returned but all copies thereof shall be destroyed after the end of the competition.

4)By participating in the competition, individuals or group of individuals unreservedly accept all the rules and mechanics of this competition.

5)If the winning entry is an entry from an individual or group of individuals within or in collaboration with schools, universities, RDIs or HEIs, the institution and theindividual or group of individuals of the winning entry, will share the cash prizes based on their existing IP policy or collaboration arrangement, and if no existing policy exists, the breakdown of prizes will be as follows:

V. Timetable

1)Submission of entries: June 30-August 12, 2016

2)Pre-screening and evaluation by IPOPHL: August 18, 2016

3)Presentation, final judging, and announcement of AMY IP Awards Winners: September 14, 2016

4)Awarding of AMY IP Awards Winners: October 12, 2016

VI. Presentation Guidelines

1)Contestants with qualified entries will be asked to present before the Panel of Judges.

2)Contestants will be given fifteen (15) minutes to present their intellectual properties to the Panel of Judges.

3)The Panel of Judges may raise questions after the presentation.

4)Allotted time for presentations will be strictly implemented.

5)In preparing the presentation, contestants must focus on highlighting the following:

  • Brief description of theintellectual property
  • Creative breakthrough of theintellectual property which includes the advantages over existing technology
  • Commercial viability of the intellectual property focusing on the potential earnings which may be generated from commercializing the intellectual property
  • Social and environmental impact of the intellectual property
  • Timeline for the intellectual property and the prospects the contestants envision on its progress (i.e. commercialization needs, future collaborations, target goals, etc.)
