MEASURING GUIDELINES

High Jump

1.Each competitor is allowed a maximum of three trials at any one height. The competitor may elect to pass any one of the trials, but they do not count as a miss. The competitor may also elect to pass an entire height, but if in subsequent heights, the competitor misses all three trials, the competitor is eliminated.

2.A competitor may attempt to clear the bar in any manner, provided the takeoff is from one foot and provided no weights or artificial aids are used.

3.The crossbar shall not be lowered after competition has started, except to determine a first place (or qualifying place to county meet) when a tie for the place is involved.

4.All measurements must be made perpendicularly from the ground to the lowest part of the upper side of the bar. Measurements shall be to the closest lesser ¼”. Example: 5’ 2.25”, not 5’ 2.375”.

5.It shall count as an unsuccessful trial: (a) when the crossbar does not remain on the supports because of the action of the competitor while jumping; (b) when a jumper touches the ground or landing area beyond the plane of the crossbar, or the crossbar extended, without clearing the bar; (c) when, after clearing the bar, a competitor stumbles against the upright and the crossbar does not remain on the supports or the competitor steadies the bar in an effort to make the crossbar remain on the supports; (d) when failing to initiate a trial that is carried to completion within 1½ minutes; (e) when the competitor breaks the plane of the bar with any part of the body, but does not actually touch the crossbar or go over the crossbar.

6.Ties shall be broken in the following order: (a) the competitor with the lowest number of trials for the height at which the tie occurs shall be awarded the higher place; (b) if the tie still remains, the competitor with the lowest total number of unsuccessful trials throughout the competition, up to and including the height last cleared, shall be awarded the highest place; (c) if it concerns first place, or a place needed to send to the next meet, (otherwise a tie is awarded) then the competitors tying shall make one more attempt for the height at which they failed and, if no decision is reached, the crossbar shall be lowered by intervals of 1 inch, and each competitor shall try once at each height until the place is determined.

Long Jump

1.Each competitor shall be allowed four jumps.

2.To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal jump in the preliminaries, if held.

3.No marker may be placed on the runway or in the landing pit. However, it is permissible to place a marker at the side of the runway or landing pit.

4.The jumper shall take off from behind the front edge of the takeoff board (or tape), which is referred to as the scratch line. It shall count as a trial, but not measured if: (a) the jumper’s shoe extends over the takeoff board or makes a mark in front of it; (b) a competitor runs across the takeoff board; (c) if, in the course of landing or leaving the pit, the competitor touches the ground outside the landing area, nearer the scratch line than the nearest mark made in the landing pit.

5.Each legal jump shall be measured perpendicularly to the front edge of the takeoff board or its extension and from that point in the pit touched by the person or apparel of the jumper which is nearest the scratch line.

6.The assistant judges shall hold the tape in such a way that the readings will be at the takeoff board. Measurements shall be to the nearest ¼”.

7.Ties shall be broken in the following order: (a) if the distance resulting from the best performance of competitors is identical, the higher place is awarded to the competitor whose second best performance is better than the second best performance of any other competitor tied for that place; (b) if a tie still remains, then go to the third best jump, then the fourth best, etc.

Triple Jump

5.In the triple jump, the hop shall be made so that the competitors shall first land upon the same foot with which they have taken off. In the step, they shall land on the other foot from which the jump is subsequently performed. The jump shall start from the landed foot of the step and end with both feet touching at the same instance. If a competitor, while jumping, touches the ground with a trailing leg, it shall be considered a trial and not measured. In all other respects, the rules for the running long jump shall apply.

6.Each legal jump shall be measured perpendicularly to the front edge of the takeoff board or its extension and from that point in the pit touched by the person or apparel of the jumper which is nearest the scratch line.

7.The assistant judges shall hold the tape in such a way that the readings will be at the takeoff board. Measurements shall be to the nearest ¼”.

8.Ties shall be broken in the following order: (a) if the distance resulting from the best performance of competitors is identical, the higher place is awarded to the competitor whose second best performance is better than the second best performance of any other competitor tied for that place; (b) if a tie still remains, then go to the third best jump, then the fourth best, etc.

Discus

1.Each competitor shall be allowed four throws.

2.To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal throw in the preliminaries, if held.

3.It is a foul throw if the competitor, after stepping into the circle, fails to pause before starting the throw, or touches the circle (not including the inner face when a marking band is used) or the ground outside the circle before the throw is marked. It is also a foul throw if the competitor, after having completed the throw, does not leave through the back half of the circle. A foul throw is not measured, but counts as a throw.

4.The measurement of a throw shall be from the nearest edge of the first mark made by the discus to the inside edge of the throwing circle nearest such mark, measured along and extended radius of the circle and to the nearest lesser inch. The “zero” end of the tape goes to the point of contact.

5.Measurements shall be recorded to the nearest lesser inch. Example: 121’ 2.25” should read recorded as 121’ 2”.

6.Ties shall be broken in the following order: (a) if the distance resulting from the best performance of competitors is identical, the higher place is awarded to the competitor whose second best performance is better than the second best performance of any other competitor tied for that place; (b) if a tie still remains, then go to the third best throw, then the fourth best, etc.

Shot Put

1.Each competitor shall be allowed four puts.

2.To be eligible to participate in the finals, a competitor must have had at least one legal put in the preliminaries, if held.

3.A legal put shall be made from the shoulder, with one hand only, so that during the attempt, the shot does not drop behind or below the shoulder. A competitor must start from a stationary position inside the circle. The put must be made from inside the circle.

4.It is a foul if the competitor. After stepping into the circle, fails to pause before starting the put, or touches the circle (not including the inner face of the stopboard or the band, if one is used) or the ground outside the circle, or the top of the stopboard before the put is marked. It is also a foul if the shot does not fall within the sector lines, or if the competitor, after having completed the put, does not leave through the back half of the circle. A foul put is not measured but is counted as a trial.

5.The measurement of a put shall be from the nearest edge of the first mark made by the shot to the inside edge of the stopboard nearest such mark, measured along the extended radius of the circle. The “zero” end of the tape goes to the point of contact.

6.Measurements shall be recorded to the nearest lesser inch. Example: 31’ 2.25” should read recorded as 31’ 2”.

7.Ties shall be broken in the following order: (a) if the distance resulting from the best performance of competitors is identical, the higher place is awarded to the competitor whose second best performance is better than the second best performance of any other competitor tied for that place; (b) if a tie still remains, then go to the third best put, then the fourth best, etc.

RELAYS

1.Relay teams shall consist of four members plus up to four additional members (alternates) of the same team. Once a relay team has been entered and declared in a competition, no further athletes (other than the declared members and alternates) may be used as substitutes in the composition of the team for subsequent meets. The composition of the team and the order or running must be declared before the start of each race.

2.All participants shall wear a top of the same color, preferably matching tops.

3.At meets beyond the Kern County Track Meet, participation of relay teams shall be limited to those clubs which hold current valid club membership in USA Track & Field prior to the Association Championships.

4.Teams violating any of the above may be disqualified.

1. Starting at your finish line working backwards on the track, on the inside lane marker (the oval itself)measure 200m backward on the track.....then go back 200m more backwards and mark the 400 stagger.....that will bring you back near the finish line or even past it on the inside lanes if your track is shorter than 400m.

Actually, if you are a perfectionist and want it accurate according to industry standards so to speak according to track and field specification, the measurement would be taken 20 centimeters from the inside line of the lane....which means you would need to attach and 20 centimeter guide to your meter wheel.

2. Move to the 2nd line on the track (the inside lane marker for the 2nd lane) do the same procedure for the rest of the lanes....line 2 for lane 2, line 3 for lane 3, line 4 for lane4.....line 5 is probably your outside boundary for the track....but you can mark it if you are running someone on the outside of the track.

Note.....the Actis track is theoretically a 400m track, but the 400 stagger for the first lane is about 4 meters in front of the finish line.....lane 2 is almost 400 meters.

Common question, the stagger doesn’t' seem to be uniform....most common reason, the lanes are probably not evenly spaced....and some zig zagging around the oval with the meter wheel too

3. For the relay boxes measure 100 meterintervals backwards for each lane from the finish line. The relay exchange is 20 meters long with the 100 meter staggers in the middlepoint of each box (10 meters on one side, 10 meters on the other). The 100m point doesn't require a line, but is your reference point for the mid point of the 20 meter exchange zone. On the 200m stagger, the mid point will be marked with the start of that event already.

4. Here is the fast and dirty of what to do in regards to measuring staggers for your track .....see link below, all you need to do is plug in lane length, radius of curve, and length of straights, it will do all of the math for your track……
Also posted on the district website....click on departments, then recreation, then track and field resources .... and you can see what the staggers and everything is for the Laurelglen Track, compliments of Larry O'Connor .... which is a 200m track. Compare with your track, could be the same .... same vendor lines all the tracks.
