Aims / To provide sufficient mathematical detail to support other first year engineering subjects and to build mathematical facility and confidence
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1 demonstrate an understanding of and show how to apply key topics in calculus, such as differentiation, integration, complex numbers, sequences and series, and partial differentiation.
2 demonstrate an understanding and use of vector techniques in two and three dimensions and basic matrix algebra.
3 demonstrate how to solve simple first and second order differential equations.
4 demonstrate the use of suitable statistical techniques and probability distributions to summarise and analyse data.
Content / Complex numbers
Differentiation (including partial differentiation)
Integration (including integration by parts)
First-order differential equations (separable, general linear)
Second-order differential equations (homogeneous, inhomogeneous)
Numerical integration and solution of equations (Newton-Raphson)
Matrix methods (notation, algebra, inversion)
Probability & statistics (quick review of basics i.e. means etc, Normal distribution, regression)
Binomial expansion
Series (arithmetic, geometric, Taylor)
Hyperbolic functions
Vectors (up to 3D)
Numerical methods of solution of ODEs (Euler, Runge Kutta)
Teaching and learning strategies / Contact hours will include lectures and tutorial classes. Personal study is encouraged through extensive referencing to specific chapters in the textbook and exercise sheets
Learning support / Use will be made of textbooks and handouts.

Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / The module seeks to give the students the opportunity to fully understand the utility of mathematics in analysing and solving engineering problems. This will build confidence in applying the appropriate methods of calculus, vectors and complex numbers.
