Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to provide safe access to an elevated position. It is used to support workers, material or equipment during construction or maintenance work.
There are two types of Scaffold that is used in our industry.
A)Interlocking (Kwiklock) Frames
All pieces are manufactured from strong, lightweight material, when erected, are self locking to form a rigid structure. When dismantled, it will store compactly.
General use of Kwiklock Frames:
Painting, Plastering, Brick laying, Plumbing, Electrical or maintenance work.
TowerHeights:
The table below shows the maximum free standing height allowed, and is based on SABS 085-1988 maximum permissible base to height ratio.
Inside StaticTowers / 4 x Min. Base dimensionInside MobileTowers / 3.5 x Min. Base dimension
Outside StaticTowers / 3.5 x Min. Base dimension
Outside MobileTowers / 3 x Min. Base dimension
A 6.4m KwiklockTower will consists of:
14x1524 Scaffold Frames
4x1524 Tie Bar / Guard Rails
2x1524 x 1524 Plan Brace
5x1524 Hook on Steel Boards
4xCastors, Base Jacks or Base Plates
Erection of Scaffolding:
Scaffolding shall be erected, altered or dismantled under the supervision of a competent person who has been appointed in writing for this purpose.
Plan Brace shall be provided to prevent distortion of scaffolding. Plan Braces shall be used at the top of the first pair of frames and then at every third pair of frames, to ensure that the towers are square.
A mobile tower shall be fitted with locking castors and the ladder access shall be inside the tower to prevent overturning.
Scaffolding shall not be left partly constructed or left in an unsafe condition, or moved or altered while work is in progress.
Safety harnesses shall be worn by scaffolders or workers, all safety harnesses shall comply with SANS50361 regulations.
No person shall be permitted on scaffolding during hazardous weather conditions.
Public access to scaffolding shall be prevented wherever reasonably possible; for example physical barriers.
No workers or material shall be on the platform(s) of a mobile tower when the tower is being moved.
Mobile towers are typically moved on level concrete or equivalent surfaces.
Frames shall be checked for out-of- squarness or twist (or both) before and during use and hire period.
A frame shall be discarded if it is not corrosion free.
All scaffolding shall be carefully inspected by a person competent in scaffolding supervision, erection and maintenance. All scaffolding must be inspected immediately after inclement weather; overloading; alterations or tilting.
All scaffolding that is erected or altered shall be done by a qualified scaffold erector and a scaffold inspector according to the requirements of the law.
Tie bars must be fitted to the bottom two frames to prevent the tower from splitting while on castors. Guard Rails need to be fitted on the top to prevent workers from falling.
B)Kwikstage Scaffold
Kwikstage Scaffold is used for access scaffolding; seating stands; concrete slab support and towers.
This scaffold is very versatile, has only four basic components, is compact when stored and overcomes uneven ground.
Standards:
Standards form the vertical support, they are made from high tenstile SABS scaffold tube – e.g. 2000mm.
Ledgers:
Ledgers tie standards longitudinally and transversely – e.g. 1219mm and 2500mm.
Base Jacks:
They are used to accommodate variations in ground levels – e.g. Ø38 / 600RO.
Hook on Steel Boards:
A non tilt board that allows interlocking and hooks on to ledgers to form a working platform – e.g. 2500mm.
Connectors:
Used for vertical connection between standards.
Diagonal Braces:
Used for bracing scaffold bays.
It is recommended that all franchisees or at least one personnel member do attend a scaffolding erectors and inspectors course. This can be an add-on service to customers that no other hiring company is doing at the moment.
