Objective:
The objective of this class is to provide opportunities for success gained through knowledge and experience, realized through the performance of music in a group setting. This class will provide the opportunity to excel in the performance of a variety of Concert Band repertoire of the appropriate level.
Grading:
The grading procedure for this class will be based on a number of factors.
Daily Class Participation: 20%
Please refer to the “Procedures and Policies” handout regarding rehearsal participation, and equipment and supplies expectations. Participation grade will be a reflection of the student’s successful fulfillment of these expectations. Assessment will be based on daily observation.
Proficiency on Instrument: 30%
Students will be assessed formally (playing tests) and informally (daily performance) on their progress and achievement of identified goals. Each student will have a minimum of one formal playing test per quarter. Students will receive at least one week notice of playing tests.
Practice Records: 20%
Each student is responsible for keeping accurate records of their home practice on the green practice records provided. Band rehearsal time is not to be counted on practice records. Private lesson time may be counted toward weekly practice total! Grades for practice time are based on a point system. Please refer to the “Practice Policy” document for details. Parent signature, verifying validity of time recorded is required. Forgery or falsification of time recorded will result in an “F”, and disciplinary action.
Performances: 30%
Performances are a celebration of accomplishment when students come together as a group to share the product of their collective work for the audience. A concert performance is a real time experience of synergy enjoyed by the musicians and audience members. It happens one time and cannot be repeated. They are an integral part of this course and as a result demand everyone’s participation. A student’s grade will be lowered two letter grades for an unexcused absence from a performance. (A becomes a C). Performance dates will be provided at the beginning of the term. You will be notified of any changes of performance dates as soon as they are made. Any potential conflicts involving a performance date must be discussed with me no later then two weeks prior to the performance. Please include an accompanying note from your parents explaining your situation. We realize that there are unavoidable circumstances during the year and will do our best to accommodate the needs of students and their families.
