SCS to Complete N.Y. Astoria Power Plant in April
SCS Astoria Energy expects the first 500-megawatt phase of a $1 billion natural gas-fired power plant in New York City to enter commercial service in April 2006, a spokesman for the project said Tuesday.

Wisconsin Energy’s 512 MW Point Peach 2 Nuke Unit in WI Starts Shutdown Nov 1
The unit began shutdown due to a degradation of containment coatings. NMC of Hudson, Wisconsin, however, fixed the problem by early Wednesday and expected to keep the unit at about 97 percent of capacity until plant workers can reinspect the degraded coating.

Progress Energy Plans to Build Up to Four Nuclear Reactors
Progress Energy Incorporated announced Tuesday at a public meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that it plans to apply for licenses to build two plants with a total of four nuclear reactors. The company hopes to build one plant in the Carolinas and another plant in Florida. If approved, construction of the plants will begin in 2010, with operation of the first reactors beginning in 2015.

NERC OKs ReliabilityFirst as a New Reliability Council
The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) approved ReliabilityFirst as the nation's newest regional electric reliability council, the new reliability watchdog said in a release. ReliabilityFirst, which is actively signing up new members interested in the reliability of the grid, will begin full operations on Jan. 1, 2006. ReliabilityFirst will eventually replace three existing Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regional councils: East Central Area Reliability Council (ECAR), Mid-America Interconnected Network (MAIN) and the Mid-Atlantic Area Council (MAAC).

PG&E and Sea Breeze Pacific Mull Undersea Transmission Line
Pacific Gas and Electric and Sea Breeze Pacific West Coast Cable have agreed to study a possible undersea electric transmission linethat wouldbring low cost power from the Pacific Northwest to northern California. The proposed 1,600-megawatt cable wouldstretch 650 miles from a substation in Portland, Oregon, tothe San Francisco Bay Area.

DOE Sees Strong Winter Distillate Imports for US
Mark Maddox, deputy assistant energy secretary at the Department of Energy said today that the DOE expects distillate imports to continue this winter, especially from Asia.

Transocean Rig Order With Anadarko Sets Rate Record
Transocean Inc., the world's largest offshore oil driller, said Anadarko Petroleum Corp. signed three-year contracts for two deepwater rigs, including one that will command a record rental rate. Contracts for the Discover Spirit and Deepwater Millennium drillships will generate a combined $985 million in revenue,
Houston-based Transocean said today in a statement.

Hardy Storage Approved for Developing West Virginia Natural Gas Project
Hardy Storage’s request to develop a system of underground natural gas storage tanks and gas transmission lines for the delivery of gas to areas in West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia was approved by FERC today. The company plans to convert two partially depleted gas production fields into two storage pools consisting of 29 storage wells and 36 miles of pipeline. The company also plans to build a new 13-mile, 20-inch pipeline to connect the storage facility to Columbia Gas Transmission's main system at its Lost River
Compressor Station.
