Teacher notes
The aim of the series of activities is to assess the pupils knowledge and understanding of the period in detail GCSE China under Mao Zedong (WJEC). The activities were principally created to aid teachers/pupils to revise and prepare effectively for the GCSE exam. It’s reccommended that teachers should utilise the resource as an aid to support lessons and consolidate the pupils understanding after the completion of a study unit.
Unit 1 activity (a)
A starter/revision activity allowing the pupils to prioritise the problems facing Mao and the comunists in 1949. More detail can be added to the points to consolidate the pupils understanding by using the note making resource.
Unit 1 activity (b)
A revision focused activity to consolidate the pupils knowledge and understanding as they decide where to place each change/development on the Venn diagram. Pupils can complete the task individually oras a group before comparing and sharing their result, alternatively the activity can lead a class based discussion using an interactive whiteboard.

A revision focused activity to consolidate the pupils knowledge and understanding as they decide where to place each change/development on the Venn diagram. Unit 1 The Great Leap Forward
A revision focused activity to support the pupils knowledge and understanding of the Great Leap Forward. By shading the statements either success or failure the pupils should be encouraged to form an opinion of the Great Leap Forward’s success. It is suggested that pupils answer the question: How successful was the Great Leap Forward?
Unit 2 The Cultural Revolution
A class, group or individual based activity to consolidate the pupils knowledge and understanding of the Causes, Event and Consequences of the Cultural Revolution. It is possible to check the correct placement of the statements at the end of the activity, or following a discussion of each individual point.
Unit 2 Mao’s last years and the struggle for power
A class, group or individual based activity to consolidate the pupils knowledge and understanding of Mao’s last years and the struggle to gain power. It is suggested that each statement is checked once it has been dragged to the timeline.
Unit 3 The relationship of China with its neighbours to the south.
A revision or presentation activity focused on China’s relationship with its neighbours. Pupils should be encouraged to discuss which relationships were focused on defending China’s borders and which were focused on achieveing the spread of communism through South East Asia.
Unit 3 Tsieina Changes in the ralationship between China and the Great Powers
A revision focused activity to assess the knowledge and understanding of China’s relationship with the USA and USSR. A class discussion should decide where to drag each statement based on date and relations on to the fate chart. The pupils’ understanding can be checked by displaying the line graph. An alternative activity would be to show the line graph and ask the pupils to explain why changes have occurred at different point in time.
