The Texas System of Care hosts statewide awareness walks and kite flying ceremonies to recognize Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day

Health care organizations across Texas collaborate to raise awareness for children’s mental health services

AUSTIN,TEXAS, May 4,2014 – The Texas System of Care, a statewide approach to improving mental health access and services to children, youth and families, is partnering with multiple mental health care organizations across Texas to invite the public to participate in regional 1 mile walks and kite flying ceremonies in recognition of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

This year’s theme, “Stand Up and Soar,” incorporates both the awareness walks and kite flying ceremonies. Participants are encouraged to wear green shoes, the designated color for mental health. Schools across Texas also participated in a kite drawing contest to kick off this year’s events.

“System of care is about engaging communities,” said Sherri Hammack, the project director for Texas System of Care. “Through this year’s Children’s Mental Health Awareness day efforts, we’ve remained consistent with our core values, engaging youths, families and the community. We invite everyone to stand up and soar for children’s mental health, especially in Texas where 58 percent of kids who need mental health services don’t receive them.”

Walks and kite flying ceremonies are taking place in the following areas:
