Test-Taking Strategies

  1. Prepare

-study in advance, and be well rested

-bring everything you need (pen, calculators, etc.)

-as soon as you get the test, write down what you need to remember (formulas, dates, etc.)

  1. Plan

-look over the entire test and decide how much time you should spend on each section, depending on the length and type of questions as well as their mark value

  1. Star and Return

-if you aren’t sure about a question, don’t waste time… put a star beside it and come back to it when you are done the rest of the test

  1. Multiple Choice

-think of the answer before looking at the choices

-read all the choices (don’t just mark the first one that sounds right)

-eliminate incorrect choices

-if two choices are either similar or opposite, one of them is likely correct

-when checking over, stick with your initial “gut feeling” if you are unsure

  1. True/False

-statements with always, never, every, all, and none are usually false

-statements with usually, often, sometimes, most, and many are usually true

  1. Long Answer and Essay

-start with the easiest questions

-brainstorm and make a brief outline

-proofread

-if you don’t know the answer, write down what you do know about the subject

  1. Math

-estimate before answering

-double check your signs (+ and -)

-make sure you are doing the right operation

-try making a diagram

-show all your work

  1. Open Book

-highlight

-sticky notes or bookmarks

-jot cheat notes

  1. Check Answers

-reread the test, checking over all answers

-don’t rush!
