Wacky Weekdays – Summer Fun

BACKGROUND

One can create crafts from objects found in nature.

WHAT TO DO

Magnets

1. Pass out scissors, colored pencils, crayons, or markers, and pictures.

2. Have them cut out the desired picture (in a circular fashion )and then color it.

3. Glue the picture to the magnet (colored side up) and then glue the ‘marble’ to the top of the picture.

4. Let dry.

Pinecone Mouse

1. Pass out pinecones, mouse faces, mouse ears, and tacky glue.

2. Have the kids cut out the mouse faces and ears.

3. Now use the tacky glue to attach the ears and face to the flatter side of the pinecone.

4. Then distribute the yarn tails, one per child.

5. Have them use tacky glue to attach the tails to the end of the pinecone.

Watermelon Craft

1. Pass out a piece of green and a piece of pink construction paper.

2. Have the kids cut a half circle out of the pink paper.

3. Next, have them cut out a slightly larger half circle from the green paper.

4. Instruct the children to now glue the pink piece to the green one.

5. Now have them cut little pieces from the black paper for seeds.

6. Have them glue the ‘seeds’ to the pink part of the ‘watermelon’.

7. Then have the youth place the square magnet—adhesive side to back of green paper—on the back of their ‘watermelon’.

Coloring Contest

1. Pass out coloring sheets and colored pencils, markers, or crayons to the kids.

2. Give them a set amount of time to complete the picture as best they can.

Pretzels

1. Pass out napkins and about of handful of pretzels to each child.

2. Have them come up with an interesting design with the pretzels.

3. Eat and enjoy!

TALK IT OVER

1. Why do magnets stick to metal but not some other materials?

2. Why is it easier to see the picture we colored now that it is under the ‘marble’?

3. What are pinecones?

4. Where can you find pinecones?

5. What tree do pinecones come from?

6. Have you ever had watermelon before?

7. What is one thing you remember from eating watermelon? (What does it taste like? What do the different colors—green or pink/red—taste like?)

8. Where do watermelons come from?
