PACING GUIDE
AUGUST
Students will become acquainted with one another through speaking assignments. Online tools including Voki, will be used to assist in students to public speaking and presenting different topics. During this two week period, students will also be introduced and familiarize themselves with the inner and outer components of the desktop and laptop computers. Activities will include worksheets, quizzes, and hands-on activities.
AUGUST-SEPTEMBER
Students will begin discussion on the importance of determining career goals and overall interests. Each student will complete a career interest inventory via the Internet and hardcopy. Students will also gain important resources from a Camp Fire USA Career Resource representative. Also students will create their Four Year Education Plan and complete a Kuder Assessment.
SEPTEMBER
Students will begin research on their career choices. During this time students will develop needed interviewing and career readiness skills, through class discussions and videos. Students will complete an online and computer based resume, complete skills tests, compile a list of questions that will be used during their own personal interview, as well as interview attire, and completion of a job application.
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER
Students will continue to research specific careers based on responses to their career interest inventory. Each student will create a PowerPoint/Prezi presentation using the following information, career, yearly earnings, job qualifications, job description, and job outlook.
Students will become familiarized with using shapes and characters in office. Students will then use shapes to create a frayer model related to a resume and its parts.
OCTOBER-NOVEMBER
Students will learn about budgeting, savings, and checking accounts. How to manage checks once received from employment opportunities.
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER
Students will begin research on different colleges. Students will learn the differences and similarities between the different types of college institutions. Students will choose two different colleges and find the following information: tuition, activities, housing, location, and scholarships offered.
Students will complete a college application and become familiarized with the overall college application process. Major Project will be a College Book/Magazine.
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER
Students will research different types of college admissions and scholarship essays and questions. Each student will be responsible for choosing one essay prompt and preparing a short essay.
JANUARY-FEBRUARY
Students will become familiarized with the different keys and techniques of keyboarding or typing. Students will be able to demonstrate proper position and posture at the keyboard and correct touch-system techniques for all alphabetic keys, numeric, and symbol keys.
FEBRUARY-MARCH
Students will demonstrate basic editing and formatting skills, correct use of command, shortcut, and function keys. Demonstrate how to key and format reports in MLA style, cite sources in a report, format, create a works cited reference page, proofread and correct errors.
Students will become familiarized with the different types of business letters, rules, and styles.
MARCH-APRIL
Students will demonstrate the ability to identify spreadsheets parts, enter data, select cells, and format and edit cells.
Demonstrate how to enter formulas to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
APRIL-MAY
Students will become familiarized with the process in developing a small business and business plan. Students will demonstrate their ability to create a business card and flyer used for advertising. Determine what information should be included in a business plan including services provided, goals, customers, marketing, cost to start business, and expected profit.
