A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY FAMILY LIFE CENTER (PROJECT FLAVA) AND WELCOMING THE FAMILY COMMUNITY VIOLENCE PREVENTION TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WORKSHOP TO CHARLESTON ON MARCH 17, 2004.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives pauses to honor South Carolina State University Family Life Center (Project Flava) for all it has done to educate and inform the public on family and community violence issues; and

Whereas, the SCSUFLC (Project Flava) has been selected as the host institution for the Family Community Violence Prevention Technical Assistance Workshop Spring meeting to be held in Charleston on March 17 19, 2004; and

Whereas, violence is a disease and remains one of the major public health problems in the United States today, and one of the nation’s largest and perhaps most culturally diverse initiatives addressing this epidemic is the Family and Community Violence Prevention Program (FCVP); and

Whereas, it is important to note that the membership of the FCVP Advisory Board is reflective of the cultural, ethnic, and geographic diversity of the FCVP programs; and

Whereas, the FCVP is a cooperative agreement between Central State University and the Office of Minority Health, United States Department of Health and Human Services, and the FCVP Consortium is composed of twentythree higher education institutions in seventeen states, the District of Columbia, and the U. S. Virgin Islands; and

Whereas, each FCVP is funded to develop innovative and effective violence prevention initiatives, and the goal of this program is to positively impact the academic and personal development of a select group of youth who are at risk for involvement in violent and other abusive behavior; and

Whereas, Family Life Centers at colleges and universities throughout the United States are conducting violence prevention activities including academic development, personal development, family bonding, cultural enrichment, recreational enrichment, and career development; and

Whereas, since the cooperative agreement was formalized in September of 1994 between Central State University and the Office of Minority Health, the program has provided violence prevention services to more than 10,000 community youth and approximately 6,000 college students; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the South Carolina House of Representatives to take notice of the Family and Community Violence Prevention Program and acknowledge the staff and volunteers of the program and the many Family Life Centers across the country for the great work they do in helping to prevent family and community violence. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina is proud to recognize the many contributions of the South Carolina State University Family Life Center (Project FLAVA) and welcomes the Family Community Violence Prevention Technical Assistance Workshop to Charleston on March 17, 2004.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to South Carolina State University Family Life Center.
