YEAR 4 EASTER PEOPLE

INTRODUCTION:
This unit focuses on The last Supper and gives pupils understanding of the symbolism and values of Holy communion/Eucharist/ Mass for Christians. It is helpful to invite a Christian visitor to take part in a questions/answer session.
The following vocabulary will be taught: commemorating, Last Supper, Holy communion, Eucharist, Mass, chalice, Patten, altar.
Pupils need some prior knowledge of the following concepts: religious observance and celebration, Passover (Jewish Festivals unit) religious symbolism. (Christian Symbolism unit).
AT1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS UNIT / AT2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS UNIT
Know the symbolism of the bread and the wine for Christians. / Discuss what can be learnt from the Last Supper about how to behave in relationships.
Ask and answer questions to develop their personal understanding of the meaning of religious symbolism for themselves and others and express how it affects personal values and behaviour.
ASSESSMENT: I Can statements for higher and lower achievers are included in the lesson plans for formative assessment.
The I Can statements below are based on the eight level scale of the Non Statutory National Framework for Religious Education.
Teachers are encouraged to refer to these at the end of each unit and make a summative assessment of the level pupils are working at. This information can be used by the class teacher for end of year reporting to parents and by the RE coordinator for monitoring the effectiveness of pupils’ learning in RE as part of the school’s ongoing self evaluation.

LEVEL 2: I can say what the bread and the wine stand for and mean to Christians.
LEVEL3: I can describe the Christian practice of commemorating the Last Supper, using the words: Holy communion/ Eucharist/Mass, chalice, Patten, altar,
LEVEL4: I can describe the importance of Communion/Eucharist/Mass for a practising Christian. /

AT2 VALUES AND COMMITMENTS

LEVEL 2: I can talk about what Holy communion/ Eucharist/Mass or another religious celebration I have experience of means to me and other people.
LEVEL3: I can talk about how to behave in relationships using examples from the account of the Lord’s Supper.
LEVEL4: I can express my own views of Easter concepts on behaviour eg. Guilt, forgiveness, betrayal, loyalty.

I can say what the bread and the wine represent and why they are important to Christians.
Higher
I can say why the celebration of Holy communion is important for a practicing Christian. / Discuss prior knowledge of the biblical events of The Last Supper. Refer to prior knowledge of the Passover celebration in Judaism and any experience pupils have of the celebration of Holy Communion in Christian churches or school Eucharist.
Reflect on the symbolism in artistic impressions of the Last Supper (old and new) and use to discuss:
·  What do we learn about relationships from the last supper?
·  Why did Jesus choose bread and wine?
·  Could he have used anything else?
·  Why is Holy Communion so important for Christian’s to-day? / Pictures of The Last Supper from internet and books.

Higher
I can reflect on the effect religious symbols and practices myself and others. / You may invite a Christian visitor to help in this session.
Act out an “agape”(this word is used by Christians who want to share bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus when there is no priest present) Explain clearly what it means for Christians, Pupils sit in a circle and pass first the bread and then grapes (instead of sharing a cup of juice!)From one to the other in silence. Play suitable background music. At the end let pupils talk about:
·  Their feelings of the experience
·  how religious symbols can help people
·  how religious practices can affect people
·  Whether symbols and practices affect the way we think and behave. / Bread and grapes
Invite Christian visitor to take part and answer questions about the celebration of Communion/Eucharist/Mass and its personal meaning for them. / Visit local church
