SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT

December 10th, 2017

7:45 a.m. – Advent Lessons & Carols

Processional Hymn 397

The advent of our God with eager prayers we greet, and singing haste upon his road his coming reign to meet.

The everlasting Son came down to make us free; and he a servant's form put on to gain our liberty.

As judge, on clouds of light, he soon will come again, his scattered people to unite, with them in heaven to reign.

Praise to the incarnate Son who comes to set us free, with Father, Spirit, ever one, to all eternity.

Lighting of the Advent Candle: PEACE

Leader: We will mark our progress through Advent using the candles of the Advent wreath. They represent the light of Christ bringing: hope, peace, joy, and love. Today we light the peace candle.

PEOPLE: Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; let not your hearts be troubled neither let them be afraid.” O Lord, we pray that your peace will flow through us to all our neighbours and that you will give us an opportunity to shareyour peace with them. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hymn 276

Thy kingdom come, O God, thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin.

Where is thy reign of peace, and purity, and love? When shall all hatred cease, as in the realms above?

When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime shall flee thy face before?

We pray thee, Lord arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight.

Men scorn thy sacred name, and wolves devour thy fold; by many deeds of shame we learn that love grows cold.

Where peoples near and far in darkness linger yet, arise, O morning star, arise, and never set!

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, thou Lord of might, who to thy tribes

on Sinai's height in ancient times didst give the law in

cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice...

O come, thou rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan's tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice...

O come, thou dayspring, come, and cheer our spirits by

Hymn 405

While shepherds watched their flocks by night all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down and glory shone around.

"Fear not," said he, for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind; "Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind."

To you in David’s town this day is born of David’s line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign.

"The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swaddling bands, and in a manger laid."

Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song:

"All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; good will henceforth from heaven to men begin, and never cease."

Sixth Reading: John 1:1-14 (page 750)

(Read by Peter Kirwin)

Reader: A Reading from the book of John.

At the conclusion of the Reading, the reader says,

The word of the Lord

People: THANKS BE TO GOD

Offertory Hymn 112

Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall. With the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high, when, like stars, his children crowned all in white shall gather round.

Prayer over the Gifts:

Priest: Priest: God our strength, we are nothing without you. Receive all we offer you this day as you sustain us with your mercy; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day: (said together)

Almighty God, who sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Intercessions

The Blessing

Recessional Hymn 36

Songs of praise the angels sang, heaven with alleluias rang, when creation was begun, when God spake and it was done.

Songs of praise awake the morn when the Prince of peace was born; songs of praise arose when he captive led captivity.

Saints below, with heart and voice, still in songs of praise rejoice; learning here, by faith and love, songs of praise to sing above.

Hymns of glory, songs of praise, Father, unto thee we raise. Jesus, glory unto thee, with the Spirit, ever be.

The Dismissal:

Leader: Go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power

of the Holy Spirit.

People: Thanks be to God.
