United Nations English Club
This club was founded in April 2008 by the instructor and students in the United Nations English Programme course, Guided Conversation. We’d love for you to join us!
Who should join? Anyone who is a native English speaker or a high level learner of the language who is interested in meeting people from all over the world, improving their English language skills, and getting to know New York City better.
How can you benefit? This club, which uses the website www.meetup.com allows
its members to:
· Attend (and host) ‘meetups’ with other members (e.g. book swaps; international dinners; brown bag lunch chats; walking tours; lectures & much more!)
· Have access to English study materials to build your vocabulary (e.g. using Newsweek magazine)
· Participate in online discussions about the English language; American culture; Newsweek articles; events, places and resources in NYC.
Become a member of the United Nations English Club meetup
- Go to: www.meetup.com
- Enter ‘United Nations’ as your interest, and 10017 as your zip code.
- Click on the link to ‘United Nations English Club’
- On the bottom of the welcome page, you will see ‘JOIN US’. Enter your name,
e-mail address and a password of your choosing. - You’ll then be asked to answer several questions (briefly is fine), and to submit your answers. As the current organizer for this online club, Jodi Nooyen (a United Nations English Programme instructor) will receive your answers and approve you for membership.
- You’ll then receive a ‘welcome’ message from Jodi.
- You’re in! You now can go to www.meetup.com anytime and sign in with your e-mail address and chosen password.
Find electronic copies of Newsweek study guides, quizzes and answer keys
- On the ‘United Nations English Club’ meetup website, simply click on ‘Files’ (one of the links on the left) and look for the appropriate Newsweek issue.
- Click on the link for the study guide, quiz or answer key, and a MS word document will open. You’re welcome to print these if you like.
Join the discussion about one or more of this week’s Newsweek articles
- On the ‘United Nations English Club’ meetup website, click on ‘Messages’ (one of the links on the left) and look for the title of an article (one of the four presented in the study guide) from this week’s issue of Newsweek.
- Click on the link to see the question and all answers already submitted (if any), and then click on REPLY to add a comment of your own.
- If you’d like to discuss another article from the magazine – not one of the four from the study guide – you’re welcome to start your own discussion about that article. To do so, click on ‘start new discussion’, title your discussion with the title of the article, page numbers and Newsweek issue date, and ask a question about the article for others to answer.
Ask questions and give advice about the English language; American culture; and events, places and resources in NYC.
On the ‘United Nations English Club’ meetup website, click on ‘Messages’ to
· ‘reply’ to suggestions and questions posed by other members; or to
· ‘start a new discussion’ to ask members a question or to share useful or interesting information.
