Project Idea for High School Seniors and Scouts Earning Community Service Badges

Coordinate a Partner Shelter Pet Walk-A-Thon/Adoption

Here is what you will need to do:

  • Contact your shelter partner to let them know that you want to hold a Walk-A-Thon/Pet Adoption to raise funds for their organization.
  • Coordinate a date and time with the shelter so that you can work as a team.
  • Once you do this, your shelter partner will work with you to arrange an adoption at the site the day of the event.
  • Ask an adult/teacher/Troop Leader to be the event sponsor.
  • Secure a walking location in your area like a track at a school or local park. (Keep in mind that there will be animals at the Pet Walk-A-Thon)
  • Send out a flier to promote the event via Facebook or e-mail. See attached sample.
  • Contact local grocers/vendors for food donations like Jet’s Pizza, Chik-Fil-A or Subway to provide food that can be sold on site for $2.00 including a bag of chips and a drink.
  • Charge a $10.00 admission fee that would include five raffle tickets.
  • Set up games of chance so that participants can earn more raffle tickets.

Examples: Bean Bag Toss, Cup Stacking, Hula-Hoop contest, etc.

  • Get donated raffle prizes. Suggestions: Gift cards and theme gift bags/baskets for cats, dogs, moms, dads, and children.
  • Enlist classmates, family, Troop Leaders or teachers to sell the admission tickets, supervise the games, sell food and clean up.
  • If this is a Senior High School Project try to coordinate the event with a middle or elementary school pet club.
  • Clean up after the event.
  • Give all of the proceeds from the event to the shelter partner representative the day of the event.
