To Whom it May Concern,

Last February, Central Reform Temple of Boston had the pleasure of traveling to Cuba with Latin Art Space. It was a fascinating 8-day tour of Havana, made possible by Latin Art Space and enhanced by the knowledge in Cuban art and culture of its founder Astrid Martinez-Jones. Our 27-people delegation had a remarkable experience and met Cubans from all walks of life.

Upon arrival, we were given an orientation to the Jewish history of Cuba through a presentation by the well-known professor and Jewish historian Maritza Corrales. Latin Art Space also arranged for our group to visit the Synagogue Beth Shalom (El Patronato), as well as the Sephardic Center, Centro Sefaradí. We were received by the directors, and had an extensive tour of the facilities and the programs that they offer the community. We also participated in a very informative guided tour of the Jewish cemetery in Guanabacoa. Our visit culminated with a Shabbat Service at El Patronato on Friday evening..

Perhaps what stands out most about our tour was the many different aspects of Cuban life and culture that we encountered, thanks to the strong ties that Ms. Martinez-Jones’ has with her native Cuba. In addition to visits to the Jewish sites, our program including visits to artists studios -were we were able to appreciate thought-provoking contemporary art-, guided walking tours of Old Havana and Vedado with an architect, a conference with the Center for Cuban Sex Education (CENESEX) on the state of LGBT rights in Cuba, and a meeting with a prominent Roman Catholic priest, who shared his perspective on religious life and freedom in an officially atheist country.

I would highly recommend other Jewish groups who are interested in experiencing Cuban Jewish life, and its broader art and culture to travel with Latin Art Space. Ms. Martinez-Jones offers a professional, conscientious, yet affable and warm experience, and an extremely well-organized program, tailor-made to suit each organization’s particular needs.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
