CourseGoal
ASE2attemptstoensuretheteachingsuccessofinternationalteachingassistants(ITAs)byenhancingtheirlinguisticandculturalcompetenceintheU.S.classroom.
This3-credit(S/U)courseisdesignedforinternationalstudentswhoscored45or50ontheSPEAKtestor23-27onaTOEFL-IBTSpeakingtestandarecurrentlyteachingaclass,lab,orleadingadiscussion.ItspurposeistoaddressaspectsoftheITAs'spokenEnglish,cross-culturalawareness,andteachingtechniquesthatarelikelytocausecommunicationdifficulties.ASEcoursesdonotcounttowardagraduatedegree.However,theyareUniversityofFloridagraduateclasses,listedinthecatalogandeligibleforfeewaiver.Theydoappearontheacademictranscript.
Method
Thiscoursehasthreebasiccomponents:
Individualobservationandfeedback-EveryotherweekanASEinstructorwillobserveeachITA'sclassorlab.Uptosevenobservationswillbevideotapedandanalyzed.OnalternateweekstheITAwillmeetwiththeinstructorforfeedbackonstrengthsandweaknessesnotedduringtheobservation.Individualneedsinareassuchaspronunciation,grammar,fluency,andclaritywillbeaddressedintheconferences.
Seminar-Theseminarmeetsweeklyfortwoperiods.Theseminarwilladdressissuesoflanguage,culture,andpedagogywhichapplytothegroupasawhole.
FinalEvaluation-Thereisnofinalexaminthiscourse,andstudentsdonotneedtotaketheSPEAKtestagain.Instead,attheendofthecourse,representativesofUFdepartmentsmeetwiththeASEinstructortoindividuallyreviewvideotapesofstudents'teaching,evaluatetheir
classroomskills,anddecidewhethertheyarequalifiedtocontinueteachingorneedfurthercourseworkinEnglish.PassingthecoursedoesnotguaranteeexemptionfromfurtherclassesinEnglishnordoesitensurefutureteachingassistantships.
Requirements
ThecourseisgradedonanS/Ubasis.ToearnagradeofS,youmust:
1.40%Attendtheseminarregularly.Weexpectmakeupworkforanyseminarmissed.Three(3)hoursofABSENCES(includingseminarand/orconference)willrequireameetingwiththecoordinatorandMAYRESULTINAGRADEOFU.
2.20%Attendtheindividualconferenceswithyourinstructorinwhichyoureceivefeedbackonclassroomobservationsorvideotaping.Itisyourresponsibilitytonotifytheinstructorwellinadvanceifyoucannotattendascheduledappointment.
3.Requirementsforclassattendanceareconsistentwithuniversitypoliciesthatcanbefoundintheonlinecatalogueat:
4.10%Completeallassignedreadings,exercises,observations,andotheractivities.
Contributetoseminaractivities.
5.30%ShowevidenceofimprovingaspectsofyourEnglishandteachingwhichyourinstructorasksyoutotarget.Thisincludesimprovementinculturallyappropriateclassroombehaviorsuchasgreetingstudentsandusingtheirnames,makingeyecontactwhileattheboard,etc.Tothisend,youmaybeaskedtocompletepronunciationorgrammarexercises,transcripts,orotherindividualwork.

PassingthecoursedoesNOTguaranteeexemptionfromfurtherclassesinEnglishnordoesitensurefutureteachingassistantships.YourdepartmentandtheGraduateSchoolmakethesedecisions.TheywilltakeintoconsiderationtheEAP5836finalevaluation.Thereisnofinalexaminthiscourse,andyoudonotneedtotaketheSPEAKtestagain.Instead,attheendofthecourse,representativesofyourdepartmentwillmeetwithyourASEinstructortoreviewvideotapesofyourteaching,evaluateyourclassroomskills,anddecidewhetheryouarequalifiedtocontinueteachingorneedfurthercourseworkinEnglish.
