June Meeting with National Quilt Teacher Mickey Depre

Mickey says: “ There is more than enough fabric in the studio to be both an Art Quilter and a Traditional Quilter!”

Her quilts have been described as whirlwinds of color. Dots, swirls, and stipes intermingle with florals and prints in an outlandish yet exciting visual parade.

Mickey’s Thursday evening lecture is called Tips, Tricks & Other Stuff, along with a trunk show of some of her favorite quilts. She will then be teaching two classes on Friday and Saturday. Please contact Linda Biondino () or Judy Bauckham () to register for classes.

Saturday – June 17 – Hugs and Kisses

Flash Sew and Quilt – 9:30 to 4:00

$35.00 payable to Naples Quilters Guild

The Hugs and Kisses quilt is in Mickey’s book Half Scrap Quilts. Mickey chose a fun print of cherries to be the star of her “hugs” blocks. Find your most cherished print and give it the attention it deserves. Choose a Kaffe print or a novelty print or even some artistic fabric that you printed yourself – and make it the star of this project. If her colors seem too traditional, create your own version with the modern “brights”, maybe using a white and black fabric for the background squares. It is also a great project for using those scraps you’ve been saving for such a quilt as this!

This quilt consists of two blocks: Missouri Puzzle and Santa Fe Trail. The goal in class is make a few scrappy quilt blocks. You don’t have to commit to a king size quilt! Mickey will also give you a BONUS table runner pattern using these blocks. She is a firm believer in trying out a pattern and learning the construction tips while making a few block in the workshops. The blocks you make in the workshop can be the start of a full size quilt or can be used for the bonus table runner. Mickey will provide printed foundation pages for each student to make at least 3 of the blocks that require them.

Coming up…..

Our July meeting will be apotluck Summer Picnic. Judy and Linda will also give you some great ideas for making your own String Quilts. These quilts are great for using up your scraps and can be made into modern, traditional and art quilts!

At our August meeting we will take a look at Log Cabins Gone Rogue. One of your first quilts may have been made of Log Cabin blocks but the quilts we will be looking at have broken the traditional mold and have gone rogue. Join us at the guild meeting to explore these wonderful creations and you will be inspired to take your own quilting into new directions.

Our August class will be Folded Log Cabinstaught by Judy Bauckham. The details will be announced in the July newsletter and you will want to sign up as soon as they are released. It is one of our most popular class days.
