Dear Ex-pupils
I am Tan Ghee Wei, the Head Prefect of Pei Hwa sec school. I am writing this letter to invite you to participate in a farewell celebration for our Principal, Mrs. Tan, who will sadly be retiring at the end of the year. I am sure we all remember Mrs. Tan for the generosity and care she has showered on all her students and the school would like to repay her for all her efforts with a special farewell event.
We had a couple of ideas in mind for the event and we have finally decided on a special addition school magazine, with a compilation of our fond memories of our dear Principal and a picture montage of past events under her guidance. Since we will be presenting this book to her, we would like to invite you to contribute your memoirs and any pictures you might have of Mrs. Lim. Your memoirs should ideally be about half a page long and the pictures could be in submitted in any format, both digital and hard copies.
Once you have your warm memoirs and pictures of Mrs. Lim ready, do post them to the school by mail or you can deliver them personally at the general office. Please help us by sending us your contributions by the 31st August as we need time to sieve through your submissions and select them for publication in the magazine.
We hope to get the publication of this magazine completed by the first week of November. Once the book is ready, we will be presenting it to Mrs. Lim at a special assembly slot especially chosen for the occasion. You may also purchase a copy of the magazine for yourself. At the present time, we have set the tentative date to fall on the 21st November as it is the last day of school and Mrs. Lim will be on leave immediately after. You are invited to attend this simple yet special and meaningful ceremony to bid farewell to our beloved principal. A detailed program will be posted to you as the date draws nearer. Your attendance at this special event will be greatly appreciated.
I hope you are as excited about this event as we are in planning it. We hope to hear from you soon with your memoirs and photographs. I am sure we all agree, Mrs. Lim deserves a special retirement gift from her students, both past and present and we want to show her our appreciation for all she has done for us.
Hope to hear from you soon. Thank You for your kind attention.
Yours sincerely,
Tan Ghee Wei

PROPOSAL for class outing
I am honoured to be entrusted with the task of proposing the end-of-year class outing. After several discussions held with the welfare committee, and taking into consideration the feedback from last year’s outing, our class would like to propose a barbeque outing at Fernvale Park.
We have chosen Fernvale Park for several reasons. Firstly, the venue is conducive for our party as it is easily accessible to everyone. Most of us live at Sengkang estate, so the park is just a short distance away. There is even a direct bus to the park. As such, we do not need to hire a private bus to ferry us there and thus can save on costs. Since it is nearby, we can also start the barbeque at a later time. We are proposing that the activity starts at five in the evening and ends at eleven.
Fernvale Park is huge and we can easily hold many activities there. As we intend to include quite a number of activities like soccer and captain’s ball, the huge place available to us will be ideal. Also, rental of the barbeque pits is relatively cheaper than at other parks, so again we can save on costs.
This year, we intend to invite all our subject teachers to attend the barbeque party. This would be a good opportunity for us to bond with our teachers and offer our personal word of thanks to them for all the hard work they have put in to prepare us for the exams. Our teachers can also supervise us and ensure the safety of all the students. Our form teacher, Mr. Silva will issue consent forms to parents with his personal handphone number so as to allay the fears they may have about the safety of their children.
Since it is a barbeque party, the class has decided to use the class funds to buy the fresh food for the barbeque. Fortunately for us, we have adequate class funds to buy the food. Thus students need not worry about food as everyone will have adequate food available to them. That also means that the outing will be free of charge for everyone.
The class has been deployed into two groups to look after the food and activities for the outing so this outing will truly be a class effort.
The class outing is organized for the sole purpose of fostering stronger bonds amongst members of the class. As it is our final year together, we want this outing to be the most memorable one for everyone, one that will leave us with unforgettable moments and lasting memories. We are confident this outing will be a successful one as we have considered all the feedback from last year’s outing when planning the program. As such we hope that you will give our proposal due consideration.

Dear Mrs Lim,
Thank you for the opportunity to present our views on the proposed building of a new facility in the school premises. After much consultation and deliberation with my peers, we have decided that the multi-purpose sports hall would provide the greatest benefits to both the teachers, students and the local community.
The multi-purpose hall will definitely benefit the students as we currently lack sufficient facilities to meet the needs of our growing student population. With the new sports hall, adequate facilities will be made available to the students. Take floorball for example. Currently this CCA is conducted in the parade square. Unfortunately, the flooring is not suitable for students and it is also potentially dangerous as the hard tar floor can cause serious injury to students if an accident were to occur. Likewise the Table tennis club trains in the CD shelter. Again this is not the best environment to conduct the training. It is indeed ironic and sad that our Badminton club has to use the facilities at the Anchorvale Sports Complex when we have a badminton hall in the school itself. Unfortunately, the hall is occupied by other CCAs like Wushu and Dance, thus making it unavailable to the Badminton Club.
The multi-purpose hall will also benefit the teachers as it would be easier for teachers to conduct and teach the relevant skills for the various CCAs if they had the correct facilities to work with. Recently, the school introduced two new CCA activities - Athletics and Swimming. For athletics, the P.E. teachers conduct the training at the nearby Sengkang Recreational Park. Unfortunately the park is not equipped with the standard running tracks and therefore it is hard for the teachers and the coaches to conduct the training there. For our swimming club, the training is conducted at the Anchorvale Sports Complex but that means more time wasted travelling to and from the complex. Teachers also find it hard to monitor the students when they are out of the school premises. A swimming complex within the school premises would definitely benefit the teachers and students alike.
The local community stands to benefit from the building of the Sports Hall as well. The sports hall could be made available to the public on both weekends and after school hours on weekdays. Sengkang is a fast growing estate and the new sports facilities will definitely be welcomed by the residents here. And this is in line with our government efforts to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle within the community.
The proposed sports complex can be carefully designed to include a dance studio and special rooms for the various CCAs. We could introduce an indoor track and field centre with the required facilities for all tract and field events. At the same time we can even consider introducing new and interesting sports events like gymnastics and rock climbing.
Indeed, the Sports complex would bring many tangible benefits to the school for both the teachers and students alike as well as benefits to the local community. We would like therefore to propose that the school consider the building the Sports complex. Thank you once again for this opportunity to presents our views.
Sincerely
Chris Silva

RE: PEI HWA SECONDARY ORIENTATION PROGRAM
As the Chairperson for the school orientation program, I would like to present our group’s suggestion on a suitable program to provide information to the primary school students who will be joining us soon.
We have decided to organise an Open House for the new students as well as their parents as we feel that it is the best way to inform them about the school and to allow them to experience for themselves, school life here at Pei Hwa.
The Open House would include all the main CCAs and clubs at Pei Hwa, since CCAs would be one of their main concerns. Each CCA could set up a booth for the benefit of the parents and students. This would allow them to roam freely about the school and observe all the CCA in action and be able to ask questions at the various booths and then make an informed choice about the CCA they would like to enrol in.
The student council will also be tasked to bring the parents and students on a tour of the school so that they will be able the see for themselves the classrooms and facilities available in the school.
Student councillors will also be officially assigned as mentors for the new students and these councillors will be introduced to them at the event. They can exchange contact numbers with the students for future communication.
After the tour, students and parents will be directed to the school hall for a briefing by the school principal on school life here at Pei Hwa. The principal will be able to address the more important issues like our academic and CCA programs and the school policies on discipline and conduct. She will also be able to address any other concerns of parents or students.
After the briefing, all guests will be invited to the school canteen for light refreshments. Guest could use this opportunity to mingle with the teachers and staff of the school for a friendly chat and also to enquire on any issues that concern them.
We are proposing that the event take place on a Saturday afternoon so as to minimise the disruption to classroom lesson time as many students would be involved in the event. Also, it is better to have it on a weekend as more parents will be able to attend the event.
I hope you will consider our proposal on the Open House for the new students who are joining us soon. We feel it is the best way to help our new students to feel at home and to settle happily in the school.
Thank you once again for the opportunity to present our ideas and we hope that our idea is accepted.

Dear Uncle Samuel,
It was great to receive your letter. Its been so long since we met and I miss you so much. I hope everyone is doing well at home too. I am really excited to learn of your offer to send me to a language school in England. I am more than happy to accept. Its really a dream come true for me. After looking through the details of the two schools, I have decided to choose the Belleview school in North England.
I choose Belleview mainly because it would allow me to live with a family and you should know I am not very independent and not very good at looking after myself. Living with a family would definitely help me to settle in quickly and I have heard the English are very hospitable.
In the information you sent, you also indicated that Belleview is located near the sea and other famous beauty spots. That’s great as I have always loved the sea. I can’t wait to take idle walks on the beach and maybe you can join me too. Also, I am really quite tired of city life, and most definitely do not want to live in London. It must be bustling with people and crowed shopping malls. Anyways, I don’t care to shop on this trip so London doesn’t interest me so much. I want to just lay back and enjoy an idle holiday and Belleview sounds like the right place. I much prefer a more local setting. And it would be safer too, I would think, to live with a family than alone in a hostel.
You mentioned that Belleview has a lot of students from Europe. That sound interesting. I can’t wait to meet them. I have always loved Europe, especially France, and I want to visit the country one day. This trip would give me a change to make new friends and contacts from Europe.
The best part is Belleview offers an internationally recognized language certificate and the fees are cheaper too. I don’t wish to spend too much money during my stay there especially when you are sponsoring me, so Belleview seems like the right choice. Also the certificate may come in handy if I intend to further my studies overseas.
Well uncle, I have to end my letter now. I have an assignment to complete and its due tomorrow. Again, I would like to thank you for this great opportunity to study abroad. You already know my choice. I look forward to meeting you soon. Mum and dad sends their regards. Bye.
Love,
John

Dear Mr Tan,
I am writing on behalf of the athletics club at Pei Hwa secondary to thank you for your generous donation to the club recently. It was indeed a pleasant surprise as this is the first time we have received any donation from the public.
