Links between Tout le monde and the Key Stage 2

Scheme of Work for French

About the KS2 SoW for French

The first half of this document was published in 2007 and covers Years 3 and 4. At this point a draft document for Years 5 and 6 was produced and displayed on the QCA website, but not published as a paper document. The final versions of the Year 5 and 6 Schemes of Work are being published in August 2009 and will replace the interim web versions.

These can be viewed on the QCA website:

In the introduction to the KS2 SoW for French, QCA give the following information:

This scheme suggests one approach to enabling learners to meet the objectives from the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages. It provides a basis from which schools can develop or adapt their own schemes. The materials are non-statutory and are meant to be used flexibly. Schools should feel free to use as much or as little of the scheme as they find helpful. They can adapt, select or substitute ideas and activities to meet the needs and priorities of the children, to fit the time available and to meet the priorities of the school.

Similarities between Tout le monde and the KS2 SoW

Both schemes offer the following:

·  A way of enabling learners to meet the all of the objectives from the KS2 Framework for Languages (this document, unlike the SoW, is statutory)

·  Carefully-built progression in language learning throughout the four years of Key Stage 2

·  A primary-style approach to learning French that is closely linked to the Literacy strategy and refreshingly different from the Secondary approach

·  Ideas for links between French and many other areas of the Primary Curriculum.

·  Lesson ideas for the teacher ranging from just half an hour a week, to an hour (the government recommendation) or more.

·  Core vocabulary items (e.g. numbers, colours, months, clothes, body parts, family members, animals etc.) built up during the course and frequently practised and reinforced.

Differences between Tout le monde and the KS2 SoW

There are two types of difference to note. The first type is to do with the nature of the resource. With the KS2 SoW, the onus is on the teacher to source the suggested material, and to make sure that he or she is confident about the pronunciation of the language to be taught in the forthcoming lesson. With Tout le monde, all of the material needed is provided through on-screen or paper activities, though suggestions are given for additions that the teacher can make. All of the language introduced is spoken by native French speakers, so although the teacher is encouraged to introduce the new vocabulary, a backup audio version is available at all times.

The second type of difference is to do with the actual language covered, and these differences are summed up in the table below. They are intentional differences, made by the Tout le monde author and development teams, who feel that certain aspects of learning French should be left to secondary school.
