10.30 – 12.00Critical Paper Review -
Led/presented/facilitated by Dr Anne Langston, PhD
Clinical Trials Unit Co-ordinator, University of Edinburgh
This is a seminar and workshop which introduces the basic skills required for critical appraisal of clinical trials papers. After an initial presentation there will be small group working to assess published papers, then a feedback and analysis session. Very hands on (OK, brains on) in a crucial area of medical practice which is often undertaught.
Dr Langston has extensive experience of organising and designing large clinical trials and has lectured on trial design and weaknesses. She is well known to many Scottish Rheumatologists as the indefatigable coordinator of the PRISM trial and is part of the burgeoning Edinburgh Rheumatology imperial staff.
The examples used will be:
Yep at al Single dose intravenous Pamidronate is effective alternative therapy for Paget’s disease refractory to calcitonin. Horm Res. 1991; 36:70-74
Hosking et al Comparison of change in bone resorption and bone mineral density with once-weekly Alendronate and daily Risedronate: A randomised, placebo-controlled study. Current Med Res Opinion. 2003; 19 (5): 383 – 394
