Postgraduate Research Programme 2017-2018
NOTES FOR APPLICANTS
Candidates wishing to apply for the PhD Track/PhD/MPhil for the session 2017/2018should note the following requirements and procedure:
Academic Qualifications
Candidates are normally expected to have obtained an honours degree in psychology of class 2.1 or better in their final examinations. In exceptional circumstances the School may be prepared to accept candidates with degrees of class 2.2 or below but this is likely to depend upon the quality of the research proposal (see below).
Application Procedure
The formal application process is through PAC ( Your application will consist of a completed School application form (available from the School office), a completed central application form available from PAC, and a 1,500 word research proposal signed by you, a principal supervisor, and a secondary supervisor.
In the first instance, you are advised to consult with a member of the staff of the School whom you think has expertise in your proposed area of research. You will find staff members’ research interests and expertise on the School website ( If you are not sure which member of staff to consult contact the School office or the head of the Research Group that is closest to your area of interest. Should you and a staff member find an area of common interest that is suitable for PhD research, you will be required to write a 1,500 word research proposal to accompany your submission. This proposal should be developed in conjunction with your proposed principal supervisor. It should also be signed by the principal supervisor and by a secondary supervisor. Your principal supervisor will suggest a suitable secondary supervisor for your consideration during your discussions. A form without a signed agreement from a supervisor will NOT be acceptable.
Application Dates
Applications for PhD are welcome throughout the year. However the university has identified four official starting dates for PhDs, October, January, April, and July. You are advised to apply at least two months before your desired start date to allow your application to be officially processed in time for the start date. If you would like to be considered for a Studentship you must make your application before 5pm on Friday 16th June 2017. A studentship includes payment of fees and a maintenance award, and is made in return for undertaking teaching and other related duties. Details of the criteria by which the School will award studentships and how students should apply will be announced later.
Funding
Acceptance onto the PhD Track does not imply that funding (studentships mentioned above) will be automatically available for the session 17/18.
