Santiago Canyon College Hosts Free International Film Festival

WHAT: The community is invited to attend the free International Film Festival hosted by Santiago Canyon College’s Languages Department during the months of April and May. Admission, parking and refreshments are free. Faculty members from the languages department will introduce the following films and lead discussion afterward:

·  Friday, April 18: LARAGAZZA CON LA VALIGIA / GIRL WITH A SUITCASE (Italy, 1961. In Italian with English subtitles. Black and white) – This film showcases actress Claudia Cardinale in her first starring role. She plays a young woman who heads alone to the city after being dumped by her boyfriend. She is befriended and protected by her ex-suitor's 16-year-old brother, who eventually becomes her new romance. Although Cardinale’s character subsists off the kindness of strangers, this film treats her with warmth and sympathy. Directed by Valerio Zurlini, who received a Best Director nomination for this film at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival.

·  Friday, April 25: MERCI POUR LE CHOCOLAT / THANK YOU FOR THE CHOCOLATE (French, 2000. In French with English subtitles. Color.) – Mika, the managing director of a chocolate company, remarries André, the concert pianist to whom she was briefly married 18 years before. But during the time apart, it seems both Mika’s and André’s lives have taken very different turns. Drama ensues when the couple begins to learn just how “extended” their families really are. Directed by Claude Chabrol. Won awards for Best Actress and Director in 2000 and 2001.

·  Friday, May 2: EL ABRAZO PARTIDO / THE LOST EMBRACE (Argentina, 2004. Spanish with English subtitles, not rated) – This Argentinean “dramedy” focuses on Ariel, a young Jewish man struggling to understand his family heritage. His grandparents fled Israel to escape the Holocaust, and his father left the family shortly after Ariel’s birth to return to Israel. When his father finally returns, he brings with him information that will change Ariel’s life forever. Winner of several awards, including Best Film at the Bangkok World Film Festival in 2004.
