I.Identification
TITLE:Teaching Assistant (temporary)
GRADE:Scale F (£22,212 - £25,440) pro rata
SECTION:St. Thomas’s Centre

II.Job Purpose
1. To deliver and assist in the delivery, planning and preparation of learning activities both in and out of school
2. When required to assist pupils reintegrating into other educational provisions.
III.Main Tasks and Key Job Activities
- To assist teaching staff in the planning, development and delivery of learning activities and programmes of support related to the identified needs of the pupils.
- To act as cover supervisor in the absence of teaching staff
- To develop positive relationships with the pupils, and staff of the Pupil Referral Unit, and to assist with the promotion of positive relationships with parents in order to assist pupil progress and attainment
- To help provide a stimulating atmosphere in which effective learning can take place, assist with the recording of progress, and through being familiar with the pupils’ levels of development, contribute to multi-disciplinary discussions (and if requested contribute to review and IEP meetings) of pupils’ needs/progress.
- To supervise and assist the pupil(s) during school activities including escorting / transporting pupils where necessary.
- To assist with the pupils’ general welfare.
- To undertake specific support programmes with individual pupils or small groups as appropriate to the development needs of the individual pupil(s) throughout the different curriculum areas.
- To respond to the needs of individual pupils in relation to hygiene, toileting, dressing, feeding and mobility; and where appropriate assist in planning and developing self-help skills in these areas.
- To assist in the specific medical/care need of the pupils when specific training has been undertaken.
- To attend staff training as appropriate.
- Undertake all duties with regard for all relevant policies and procedures.
- Abide by the objectives and targets of both the Department and the Section and follow the procedures and practices utilised in all aspects of the work including computerised and manual systems and the maintenance of relevant records.
- Fulfil personal requirements where appropriate with regard to Council policies and procedures, particularly health and safety, equal opportunities, customer care, emergency evacuation, security and work standards and promotion of the Council’s Core Values.
Note: This Job Description forms part of the contract of employment of the person appointed to this post. It reflects the position at the present time only, and may be changed at management’s discretion in the future. As a general term of employment, the Council may effect any necessary change in job content, or may require the postholder to undertake other duties, at any location in the Council’s service, provided that such changes are appropriate to the employee’s remuneration and status.
