75 Triangle Leaders to Visit Richmond, Va. for Transit and Economic Development Insights

Business coalition event explores bus rapid transit, higher speed rail, development, and more

RESEARCH TRIANGLE REGION—The Regional Transportation Alliance business coalition is conducting a leadership briefing and tour to Richmond, Virginia this Tuesday, November 28, and Wednesday, November 29. More than 75 elected, transportation, business and community leaders will visit our neighboring capital city of Richmond to learn about transit and multimodal investments, tourism, and economic development. The 2017 tour is RTA’s 10th visit to another regional market since 2005.

Key focus areas of the tour include:

·  Richmond’s first bus rapid transit line, currently under construction and opening spring 2018.
In-depth briefings will inform efforts in our area, including Wake County’s studies for four bus rapid transit lines and the planned Chapel Hill bus rapid transit corridor.

·  Richmond’s new bike share system, which just opened this summer with Bewegen bicycles—
the same vendor that Raleigh will use for its system which launches next year.

·  Richmond’s land use and redevelopment initiatives will inform development planning around transit stations in Durham, Orange, and Wake Counties.

·  Richmond’s higher speed rail preparations to connect the southeast corridor between Raleigh and Washington, D.C. And, its newly renovated multimodal terminal, Main Street Station.

·  Virginia’s technology and innovation focuses including automated vehicles, smart roadways, and complete streets initiatives.
