Dear Recruiting Manager:

Please accept my application for a Consultant position with Bain & Company. I believe my logical thinking, quantitative analysis, and team-work skills obtained through education and experience have prepared me well to add value to clients.

I completed a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Taiwan in 2001. Through an extracurricular seminar on the Asia-Pacific Institute’s Carbon Credit Initiative, I worked closely with science post-grads and was exposed to scientific data analysis. This experience opened my eyes to the importance of collaboration between science and businesspractitioners and first ignited my curiosity to study science to attain analytical skill.

After receiving a prestigious full merit scholarship, I pursued a B.A. in Chemistry from XXXUniversity in the U.S., graduating in 2003 with top honors. I was accepted into Harvard’sDevelopmental Genetics Ph.D. program, where I successfully defended my dissertation in 2009. I accepted a role as a postdoctoral research scientist at Stanford, despite a growing concern that my career was progressing towards depth without impact.

Last year, almost as an extracurricular effort, I started a company with a co-founder. As scientists, we felt that there were major problems and inconveniences in purchasing laboratory supplies; together we have worked as a team to create a solution for the market. In the last 12 months, we have developed web-based software to facilitate cross-laboratory consolidated purchasing, vendor bid comparison, order placement and delivery tracking. In addition, the program can analyze trends and help disparate manage spending throughout a budget cycle. Our soft launch of the program was adopted by 14 top universities, and we have built a management team to scale the company.

Although peers and colleagues had suggested consulting over the years, it was only after I became an entrepreneur that I realized I wanted to pursue consulting as a career. While before I had considered business to be impersonal and purely profit-driven, I have discovered first-hand the excitement of creativity and innovation combined with data-driven decision making that drives value addition and adoption. Along the way, I also realized that I have so much to learn; I am excited tolearn business strategies and eager to help companies achieve their goals.

I would be very excited to interview for the Bain & CompanyConsultant position for Fall 2013. I am confident my drive for excellence, hunger for new challenges, creativity, intellectual curiosity, and ability to consistently achieve excellence suits Bain’s culture of supporting individual growth and welcoming entrepreneurship.

Thank you for your time and consideration; I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Xi
