Purpose
This qualification recognises the skills and knowledge required for management or training in the Hairdressing Industry. It also provides recognition for advanced skills. The core compulsory section recognises the importance of communication and interpersonal skills, and the advanced hairdressing and management skills required within the industry.
The Assessment of Hairdressing strand recognises the skills required by registered assessors to ensure that they make fair, valid, and consistent judgements in accordance with national standards.
The Tutoring in Hairdressing strand offers experienced hairdressers the opportunity for recognition of the skills and knowledge required to train and develop skills of hairdressing trainees. It acknowledges the need for tutors to be skilled hairdressers, and conversant with principles and practices required to provide best practice in a training environment.
The Salon Management strand provides recognition for the more complex hairdressing skills and knowledge required by clients. It also allows people to choose the most appropriate skills and knowledge required to effectively manage a small business within the hairdressing industry.
This qualification can follow on from theNational Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) [Ref: 0022], which can follow from either theNational Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) [Ref: 0268]or the National Certificate in Barbering [Ref: 0418].

Version 3 was republished to correct an error in the credit range table and to add reverse transition for expiring standards.
Version 3 was issued to remove expiring standards, to update the qualification format, and to incorporate changes resulting from other standard reviews.
Changes to structure and content
- The following standards were updated to incorporate changes made at review: 1987, 1988, 4098, 8495, 9680, 11098, 11281, 11551, 11552 and 18203.
- Expiring standards 11994 and 8494 were removed from the Salon Management Strand.
- The classification of standards 1987, 8495 and 8496 were updated to Subfield: Business Operations and Development; Domain: People Development and Coordination.
- The Business subfields and domains were updated in the Salon Management Strand Elective.
- The number of Level 5 credits required for the Assessment of Hairdressing Strand Elective was increased from 7 to 10.
- The number of Level 5 credits required for the Tutoring in Hairdressing Strand Elective was increased from 15 to 20.
- The number of Level 5 credits required for the Salon Management Strand Elective was increased from 5 to 25.
This version of the qualification contains classifications that replace earlier classifications. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for standards in the lapsed classifications may continue to use those credits to meet the qualification requirements.

Reverse Transition
This version of the qualification includes standards that have been replaced. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for replacement standards are exempt from the requirement to gain the replaced standards listed in this qualification.

Version 2 was issued following the review of the hairdressing standards and to incorporate changes resulting from other standard reviews. Level and credit values, and titles of standards 6400, 6402, 4098, 1988, 13464, and 13468 were updated. Standard 13468 was included in the core compulsory, standard 11280 was removed from the Assessment of Hairdressing Strand, and standard 4099 was removed. Standards 18203 and 11098 were added to the compulsory requirements for Assessment of Hairdressing Strand, and standard 11552 was added to the Tutoring in Hairdressing Strand compulsory.

Quality Management Systems
Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess by a recognised Quality Assurance Body before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Accreditation requirements and the moderation system are outlined in the associated Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP) for each standard.
