1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 1:15 by Curriculum Chair, Linda Larson Singer.

2. Welcome and Introductions

Charles Ingram, Professor of Music, and Dr. Arabella Persaud, Professor of Foreign Languages, were introduced.

3. Approval of Agenda

The Revised Agenda was approved as presented.

4. Approval of Minutes (11/15/05 Meeting)

M/S/P to approve the minutes of November 15, 2005 with the correction that Dr. Sharon Maselli was present.

5. Reports:

A. Academic Affairs, Vice President, Leige Henderson – No report

B. Academic Affairs, Curriculum Dean, Dr. Earnestine Thomas-Robertson

Dean Robertson stated that Winter enrollments are low; she thanked those who worked on and turned in 5-semester plans, they are almost all in; she distributed a list of course outlines now published on the college website, the outlines will be used as evidence for Accreditation; the Pan-American Studies program is on the January Board Agenda; she distributed information regarding the hiring of tutors including the citation from the Educational Code, Section 58170, Apportionment for Tutoring.

C. Academic Senate President, Reggie Morris

Reggie stated that he would comment later.

D. Academic Senate (SLO Committee), Glenn Yoshida

Glenn stated that a great deal of information had been gathered at the SLO College Forum; the committee will look for common themes for institutional values; two workshops were held regarding course level SLOs, faculty had requested more hands-on work on writing them.

E. Articulation Officer, Linda Larson-Singer

Linda reported that Transfer Sheets will be posted on the college website; IGETC and CSU-GE submissions were completed. (Report distributed)

F. District Curriculum Committee, Linda Larson Singer

Linda reported that an appeal process after District course posting continues to be discussed; as does cross-listing of courses within different disciplines; a controversy of a course proposed in the Dance discipline continues to be opposed by the District PE Discipline. (Report distributed)

G. Matriculation Coordinator, Rose Calderon

Rose stated that the Assessment Center will be open during the Winter break and she expects it to be very busy during the first week of January when the Winter intersession begins.

7. Old Business

A. Advanced Courses Application Taskforce (Morris, Lee, Magee, Yoshida)

An agreement between the AFT and Dr. Levy needs to be reached concerning the Advanced Courses list. The committee plans on meeting during the first week of Winter intersession.

B. Noticed Motion: “To limit acceptance of units taken at other institutions for the LASC Child Development degree.” (Cliff) The motion was moved and seconded; there was discussion. Kathi Cliff, Department Chair, stated that the motion was to bring LASC in line with Child Development disciplines through the LA District. The discipline proposes that students take CH DEV 3 (3), CH DEV 4 (3), CH DEV 22 (4) plus an additional 6 CH DEV units (16 units of 31 total for CH DEV major) at LASC. There has been much discussion during the last 8 years at the District discipline level, especially keeping in mind the need to answer to other boards. It is a vocational education driven discipline. Other colleges in the District are limiting units accepted for degrees, whether noted in their catalogs or not. There was concern expressed that LASC students would be penalized for taking classes at sister colleges and still not being able to get degrees, when they would neither be able to repeat the class here. It was stated that an appeals process is necessary. Kathi agreed that a process would be developed. The

motion passed unanimously.

C. Goals of the Committee (Larson)

Linda stated that various goals need to be established, one being a review of research done on the demographics of the surrounding community as they relate to jobs and possible new programs. Also, the General Education Subcommittee needs to be reestablished. Volunteers were Glenn Yoshida, Shelley Werts and Dean Robertson, along with Linda.

8. New Business

A. Course Outline Approval, Updated Outlines, Prerequisites and Advisories

*Music 101 and 111, no prerequisites: M/S/P approve outline updates

*Developmental Communication 21 and 23, no prerequisites: M/S/P approve outline updates pending

corrections and course change requests (from graded courses to CR-NCR, effective Fall 06) Reggie

stated that the change in grading is needed so students can focus more on the material. There is an

overarching need to help students get through the process more quickly. Prerequisites and

corequisites can be considered later. Leige stated that block scheduling could be considered.

dissensions, Morris and Maselli) There was discussion. 54 hours was thought to be excessive by

some for 1 unit of tutor training. Sandra Lee stated that it did not need to be the vehicle for tutoring;

the content could be used for a pre-teaching program that will hopefully be built upon. In its present

form, it is open for all students, not only specifically for tutoring. Leige asked how the class had

been listed in the galleys if it had not yet been approved by the Curriculum Committee.

B. Noticed Motion: “To include at least one SLO for all new program requests.” (Yoshida)

M/S/P. There discussion; the vote was unanimously in favor.

C. Supplement to the Curriculum Approval Process (Dr. Levy)

Dr. Levy distributed a page for consideration dealing with Mission of College, SLOs, Textbooks, Supplemental Materials and Budget. She suggested that there be some level of consistency of books and supplies and that consideration also be given to requiring additional software packages. New or added classes must address Mission and Need. Faculty must be aware of the audience. There are not enough developmental courses. She also stated that the SLOs she has reviewed in recent outlines seem more like objectives than SLOs. Linda stated that assessment of SLOs is the next step.

D. Certificate: Professional Spanish (15) (Persaud)

Program Description: “This program focuses on preparing students to work in offices in which it is required to be bilingual in Spanish and English. Students will be trained to communicate orally and in writing in business situations. They will learn vocabulary specific to business and will be familiarized with the cultural aspects in the Hispanic business world. They will also practice writing letters and memos in Spanish.” Required: Spanish 1 (5) or 44 (5), Spanish 2 (5), Spanish 14 (3) or 24 (3), Spanish 8 (2). M/S/P pending corrections to Spanish 14 and proposal. (distributed)
