Candle Safety Program – Rules & Permit Application
Candles are a leading cause of fires in College residential settings. The following policy is stated in Appendix C of the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering Student Handbook:
“Strictly Prohibited: The following are prohibited in College residence halls:
- Open and enclosed flames.”
The rules below pertain to any and all burning of candles in the residence halls. These rules were developed to reduce the potential for life threatening and damaging fires associated with the improper use of candles.
Permits will be granted on a case-by-case basis following a review of the permit application by the Campus Safety Office. Only students who follow these rules and submit this completed application will be authorized to burn candles. The non-permitted burning of candles or other materials will be deemed a violation of the Olin College Honor Code.
The following rules pertain to all permit applications:
Candle and candleholder(s) cannot exceed 4” in height.
Candles must be placed in a pan filled with at least ½” depth of water. Pan is to be non-combustible material (ex: metal not plastic).
The pan must be large enough to catch the candle(s) if it fall(s) over in any direction.
The candle must be placed on a table or desk that is cleared of combustible materials; the candle(s) should be 36 inches from any clothing, papers, books, wood, wall hangings, posters, or curtains.
Remove sources of drafts (open doors/windows) that may blow combustible materials into contact with the candle(s).
Keep candles out of reach of children & pets
Candle(s) are not to be left unattended for any length of time.
Candles must be extinguished if someone is sleeping in the room.
