Course Description:
This course enables students to develop skills necessary to participate in individual activities, dual activities, dance and rhythms. Students develop an understanding of the components of total health fitness that emphasizes basic physiological and social benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. All students must also be tested in the state physical fitness assessment; maintaining personal fitness logs and goal setting.
The IB Learner profile:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ten Learner Profiles and will seek to determine their own
strengths and improve their own areas of weakness. They will also learn to recognize the strengths of others and their contributions to any given activity.
MYP Aims and CA State Standards:
· Students demonstrate competent skills in a variety of physical activities and sports.
· Students demonstrate competency in physical fitness.
· Students demonstrate the knowledge of factors important to participation in physical activity.
MYP Objectives:
· (Health and Social Education) To enable students to understand the benefits of all-around fitness and health in regards to warming-up, skills practice and participation. These are essential for a good exercise program that will ensure personal gain in their present and future health.
· (Health and Social Education) To prepare students for personal responsibility by “dressing out” in separate gym clothes. This includes using gym locks and lockers and good personal hygiene.
· (Community and Service/Health and Social Education) To expose students to the benefits of good sportsmanship while being consistently positive to one another no matter the talent levels of every student.
· (Environment) To assist students in acquiring the skills and mind-sets to become competitive in order to create a “fun” and healthy classroom environment.
· (Approaches to Learning/Community and Service) To introduce students to the responsibility of learning the “content” of Physical Education through demonstrations and breaking skills down into their key essential components. The students will demonstrate their knowledge through combining skills to play a particular sport, game, or activity.
· (Human Ingenuity) Students will be able to create and design “plays” in various sports in order to become more competitive and to create more ownership in each sport.

Grading:
- Points are awarded each day for a) dressing out, b) warming up properly, and c) being on time.
- Points are awarded for participation and effort in skills acquisition
- Points are awarded for assigned homework completed. Each will be graded for: a) Content understanding b) neatness c) promptness d) literacy and communication skills.
- Grades are affected by positive/negative interaction with classmates and teammates. Students’ attitude toward good sportsmanship will be documented and considered for final grades.
Parent/Student Pledge and Support
We hereby acknowledge the expectations of the Physical Education Course and commit to support the following guidelines:
Attendance Policy:
- Students will be dressed, prepared with appropriate materials, and ON TIME to receive full credit each day
Dressing Policy:
- Wear the proper El Sereno MS P.E. uniform on a daily basis
- Collared shirts, sweaters or jackets are not permitted under P.E. shirt
- No pants of any kind under gray P.E. sweat pants
Participation Requirement:
- Students will actively participate in all class activities
- Students will take proper care of facilities, equipment and supplies
- Students will remain in the designated activity area for the duration of the class
- Students will attend second roll call at the end of class and be dismissed by the teacher only
Locker Room Policy:
- Students will conduct themselves in a safe and positive manner consistent with the rules and procedures that demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a principled El Sereno student.
Progressive Discipline Policy:
- Progressive Discipline measures will be used in the classroom
