Welcome to the 2018 season of Euclid Panther swimming!

We’re glad to be back for another season, and we hope you are too. To our new families, welcome, and we are pleased to have you as a part of the Euclid tradition.

As you begin to get ready for another fun and exciting summer, understand that we’ve already started to focus on the challenges that will be infront of us for the next eight weeks.

The challenge of competing in Division 2 remains. We held our own against some great competition in the league. Last year, our record was 3-3 and we finished 3rd in our division. We finished 7th in championships. With one eye on teams behind us – we continue to shoot towards the top as we try to narrow the gap between them, and us; but more importantly overtake all for Division 2 championship.

We know we don’t have the depth that those teams have, but we also know that our talent will match up with anyone in the league.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Most importantly, remember, it is summer – and we’re all just having fun.

Please use this handbook for your reference throughout the season. If you have any questions, or need further explanation, please let any of the coaches or board members know. A lot of team information can also be found on our team website.

It is the responsibility of the swimmer and their parents to know the rules and expectation of the team.

Thank you for taking your time to go through this. And again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, as we want to be able to make this as successful season a possible.

GO PANTERHS!!

TEAM

Training Requirements…

  1. General Training Rules…
  2. Work hard during EVERY practice to develop your muscles and conditioning needed for a successful season. Remember, for every practice you miss, or “slack” off, it takes 2 practices just to make it up.
  3. It is CRITICAL that swimmers maintain a good basic diet. Helpful hints…
  4. During meets – consume foods like fruit juices, bananas, crackers, toast, bagels, raisins, muffins, Gatorade. Limit the amount of food consumed.
  5. Fluids – Swimmers are vulnerable to dehydration. Dehydration of as little as 2% of body weight can hurt performance. To prevent dehydration, swimmers must drink plenty of fluid before, during and after practice or meet. Especially on hot days in the summer, the swimmers are encouraged to bring water bottles to practice with them. In between sets is a perfect time to rehydrate.
  6. Practice Schedule
  7. We have practice each day from 8am-10am for age 11 and older swimmers, and from 8:00 – 9:30 am for 9-10s, and 8:00-9:00 for 8 and unders (workout times and groups may be adjusted based on ability)
  8. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6-7:30. This is in addition to regular practice times. This will not be the stroke work as in the past. There will be more difficult set given to add to the endurance of the swimmers. This practice is open to anyone 10 and older or by permission from the head coach only. The coaches will vary during this time slot, though Danny will be there most evenings.
  9. Attendance…
  10. ATTENDANCE IS EXPECTED.
  11. Each swimmer is expected to make THREE of the available practices each week. You are allowed and encouraged to attend more than the expected amount, it will only make you better!
  12. Attendance will be taken at every practice by the coaches.
  13. We understand the majority of families take vacations during the summer months. We also understand that the swimmers participate in other sports or activities. With that in mind, attendance at all swim meets is highly recommended, unless you have already notified the coaches that you are unable to attend.
  14. You must participate in 3 meets in-order to qualify to swim in the championship meet.
  15. Notify your coaches. If you cannot make the expected amount of practices or any meets, PLEASE fill out a vacation form and give it to the head coach.
  16. Practice Attitudes…
  17. During practice, you are responsible for completing the entire workout. Every set of every practice is done for a reason.
  18. Be respectful. Have respect for your coaches and the things they are trying to teach you. Also, be respectful to your teammates. Everyone is there to practice in order to get better, and even if you don’t feel like being there on a certain day, others do and want to work hard. Be respectful of that.
  19. Be positive. Don’t have a negative effect on yourself or your teammates at practice. Coaches will not tolerate whining, complaining or other negativity during practices or meets. If you have a problem, talk to a coach after practice in private.
  20. Swim meet Guidelines…
  21. If you have not told your coaches otherwise, all team members are expected to be at the meets. Lineups are set during the middle of the week (by Thursday mornings) and when a swimmer does not show up, it cause many shifts to the lineups, which is a major distraction and disruption to both the coaches and your teammates.
  22. All meet lineups are done by Thursday morning, the coaches MUST know by Wednesday evening if you will not be attending the upcoming meet.
  23. Showing up late to the meet will result in you being removed from your events, it will be assumed that you are not coming and the lineups will be changed before warm-ups.
  24. Unless otherwise instructed by a coach, all swimmers participating in the meet are expected to warm-up.
  25. All team members must remain in the pool area during the meet.
  26. Team spirit, enthusiasm, and encouragement make a big difference. Cheer for your teammates in the water.
  27. Post-race protocol:
  28. Stay in the water until all swimmers are finished with the race.
  29. Congratulate your opponent, win or lose.
  30. Get your time from the timer.
  31. Talk to your coaches about your race. Your coaches are there to help you continue to improve.
  32. Always be courteous to other coaches, officials and swimmers. Never display poor sportsmanship. It is your job to make sure there is no reason to criticize Euclid Panther swimmers.

2018 Euclid Panther Team Goals

MAKE IT COUNT

If you want to be better than the competition, then you have to work harder than the competition. When you come to practice, you have to be there to work hard, not just to get into the pool on a hot day. Come to practice, listen to your coaches, do the drills, put in the time, swim the laps and in the end, your performance will be your reward. In other words, to MAKE IT COUNT, you have to:

  • Arrive for practices and meets on time
  • Attend as many practices as you can, not just the minimum required amount.
  • Make sure you are prepared for that days practice or meet.
  • Put in a quality effort each and every time you get in the pool.
  • Don’t get relaxed during practice, continue to push yourself
  • Support your entire team
  • Swim your races the way your are taught and the way you practice them
  • Stop looking at your competition – either on the block or in the water – they don’t control what you do
  • Strive to swim your personal best times every time in the water.

Panther Class

Kids on other teams in the league practice just as hard as we do, and they deserve everything they accomplish in the pool. That’s what makes competition great. So win or lose, individually or as a team, we want to show our Panther Class.

And we do so by:

  • Winning with grace and losing with dignity
  • Remaining in the water until all swimmers are done
  • Congratulating and shaking hand with the swimmers in the lanes next to you
  • Showing team spirit and cheering on your teammates
  • Remaining behind the blocks with your relay until all of you are done swimming
  • Having a positive attitude in our team area at meets
  • Having respect for the officials, opposing swimmers and coaches
  • Where we go one, we go all…
  • No one is left behind because of their skill level or disability
  • We are a team, we bring each other up, not tear each other down

ZERO DQ’s AT CHAMPIONSHIPS

This is a summer recreation league, as such; it is a learning experience for many. As your skills get better, you will be asked to swim in many different races. Your coaches are there to teach you all the strokes, turns, starts and finishes throughout the summer. By listening to what they are trying to teach you, and making each practice count, you will be able to swim each stroke in the correct form. Receiving a DQ in any meet means that you do not score points for your team, no matter how fast you were. Speed is a byproduct of doing everything right. Do everything correctly, and you will get faster and by not receiving a DQ, you will begin to score more point for your fellow Panthers.
