JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Language Assistant (Chinese or Japanese)

REPORTS TO: Chair of the Asian Studies Department

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Asian Studies Department offers Chinese and Japanese classes for four hours per week. Three hours are taught by the language faculty of the department. The fourth hour is a language lab session coordinated by the Language Assistant under the direction of the language faculty. The Language Assistant coordinates the language lab and provides support for the activities of the lab sessions by offering office hours for students and grading quizzes and tests given during the lab sessions.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. Coordinate Chinese or Japanese language lab sessions

2. Hold 2 office hours each week

3. Meet weekly with the language faculty

4. Assist language conversation table

5. Correct tests and quizzes for Chinese and Japanese language lab sessions

6. Provide support for student and faculty communication with Chinese or Japanese

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential:

Native or near native language proficiency in Chinese or Japanese; high school diploma or equivalent.

Living or working experience in a Chinese or Japanese environment

Desirable:

College studies or comparable background. Cultural knowledge of China or Japan; experience with Word, Gmail and Moodle (or other classroom management system)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

· Native or near native competency in Chinese or Japanese language

· Intermediate competency in English language

· Ability to work with a diverse community of faculty and students

· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

· Familiarity with Gmail, Word, and a classroom management system

· Good communication and organization skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing and sitting in classrooms and office

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Office or classroom environment (Chinese or Japanese language labs; language assistant’s office; World Language Center)

WORK SCHEDULE: FTE: .19

Term: 9 months

Shift: Approximately 16 hours per week within Monday 8- 5 work week, with one possible evening per week
