Overall goal: To help you realize your school work is a job and it is developing lifelong skills right now.

Essential Question:

Unit: How can I correspond on a professional level?

Lesson question: What does an effective resume look like?

What am I expected to do in order to complete a job application?

Why do I need to include a cover letter?

Standard:

  • ELA8R1.e Informational Text: Use information from a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents (e.g., job applications) to explain a situation or decision and to solve a problem.
  • ELA8R1.c.b Informational
  • ELA8W2.d Technical Writing: Applies rules of Standard English.

How it works:

  • Students will learn various techniques of filling out applications; apply proper Language Arts skills and writing techniques.
  • Students will learn what it means to work in the work force.
  • Students will have a “on the job experience” by understanding their “job” as a student in relationship to responsibility now and how it relates to a future job (part time during high school, after high school and beyond)
  • Students will experience a “Time Card” for 4 ½ weeks.
  • Your “Time Card” will be tied into a weekly grade for seminar. You will carry your Time Card around to each academic subject and will have your “supervisor” (your teacher) sign it every day.
  • Your pay is based on as the work force calls it “Performance Based” or Steps
  • Your “weekly paycheck”will be based on turning in all homework/projects ON TIME everyday.
    In Seminar you will receive:
  • 100 quiz grade for all five subjects all week,
  • 100 class work grade if 3-4 subjects all week
  • 70 homework grade if 1-2 subjects all week
  • 0 quiz grade if you just refuse to do homework/projects

EMPLOYEE WARNING:

As with all jobs in the workforce, you will participate in an “employee warning” after two weeks if you become complacent with your job. A note home to your parents will be sent to notify them.

EMPLOYEE PROMOTION/EVALUATION

At the end of the 4 ½ weeks, students “pay” will be rewardedin a seminar grade of:

ALL FIVE subjects - 100 test grade

In 3-4 subjects - 100 quiz grade in our class

In 2 subjects - 100 class work grade in our class

Other News:

JOB FAIR: After you have learned to fill out applications, we will have a “job fair” in which we will have various “real applications” for you to fill out in class.

ON THE JOB TRAINING: Once a week (Tuesday) in our class we will drop seminar topics and focus on the other academic areas. You will go to a group that you want to concentrate on that week (math, science, language arts, Ga studies) and we will have “trainee’s”there to help you.
