ATTENDANCE: Students are responsible for any material that is missed due to absence from class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students are introduced to shooting, editing, studio, lighting, and sound principles. Live-to-tape studio projects introduce all roles of studio production and team building skills. Students create a one-minute montage on a non-linear edit system, as well as write, produce and edit their own PSA.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course the student will be able to:

1.Identify and explain the television production system and process.

2.Describe the video and audio signal path and operate the various pieces of equipment involved.

3.Identify and explain the roles of production people.

4.Identify and explain various careers in the media field and how to develop a career goal.

5.Demonstrate camera operation as it pertains to creation and images to achieve a desired effect.

6.Operate studio equipment and realize the role teamwork takes in television production.

7.Direct a short studio program.

8.Produce a short, single camera field production.

9.Edit a short production on a non-linear edit system.

ASSESSMENT MEASURES:

Students will be required to:

  • Demonstrate these abilities on written exams (objectives 1, 2, 3, 4).
  • Perform certain tasks in the lab to the instructor’s satisfaction and to industry standards (objectives 5,6,7,8,9).

POLICIES:

Assignments: 10 point per day deduction for any assignment turned in past the due date.

Quizzes:The lowest of 6 or more quiz / assignment grades will be dropped. Students that are not physically present when the quiz is distributed will have to make an after school appointment to take the quiz. Late or absent students will receive a zero for that quiz grade until it is made up. If a student gets below a 70 on any quiz he/she can also make an after school appointment to re-take the quiz.

Midterm:Students that are absent for the midterm will be penalized 15 percentage points on the midterm exam grade. Exam will be taken as soon as possible and at the discretion of the instructor.

Lab:Students must follow all lab rules and procedures or forfeit their lab privileges.

Lavatory Use: If possible please attend to you lavatory needs before coming to class. If you need to go to use the facilities during class, I ask that you wait until the end of class, or during any down time. Please do no interrupt a lecture unless it is an emergency.

Any project, paper, or examination is expected to be the student's own work - in the student's own words. Academic dishonesty (including but not limited to copying another student's work or allowing one's own work to be copied; using notes or books during an examination without the instructor's advance permission; presenting information or images copied from a book, journal, or online source as one's own) will not be tolerated.

LABS: Some of the labs are group projects, which requireteam participation. Any student absent or missing from lab participation can be penalized individual points off the final team grade for each missed or non-participatory lab. Please make sure you do your share of the work.
