National Certificate in Greyhound Care and Training (Kennel Hand) (Level 3)
Level / 3Credits / 73
Purpose
This qualification is for people with some experience in the greyhound industry, who wish to gain skills as kennel hands to assist with the care and training of greyhounds for racing.
People will have the skills to care for a greyhound in a kennel situation including the skills related to: bathing and grooming; cleaning kennels; catching, collaring, and preparing for an activity; preparation for travel, loading and unloading, and attending to post travel requirements; feeding; identification of signs of health, common health problems and lameness; and preparing for, and attending to, a greyhound at the races.
People will also have knowledge of greyhound nutritional requirements, kennel complex design and construction, raceday procedures, and the greyhound racing industry structure and judicial system.
As employment in the greyhound racing industry involves interrelating with other team members, people will be able to interview in a formal and informal situation, give oral instructions, protect own health and safety; recognise sexual harassment and describe ways of dealing with it, manage own use of alcohol and other drugs; and demonstrate knowledge of stress and ways of dealing with it.
People will also be able to describe and apply knowledge of information and computer technology in the racing industry, and perform workplace calculations.
All standards in the qualification are compulsory because employment as a kennel hand involves a set of defined skills which are common across all workplaces.
