SUBJECT: Structures and MechanismsYr: 7SET: Mixed
Learning Plan Spring 2This half term I am learning: about mechanisms for part of the module and how we use mechanisms to help make moving objects easier. I will also learn how we use gears to generate movement in machines and allow humans to lift heavy weights. In the last part of the module I will learn about structures and the different types of forces that they are put under when they are loaded or stressed. At the end I will: Be able to understand how forces are applied and through practical experimentation understand the use of levers. Where gears are used in everyday life, I will able to understand and use the design process to create and produce good quality practical outcomes.
Gospel values and SMSC: It is important to be kind and tolerant when working together. / Key Words:
Force, Linkage, Tension,
Pivot, Mechanisms, Gears,
Fulcrum, Lever, Motion
CLASSWORK / LITERACY/ NUMERACY FOCUS / HOMEWORK/ ASSESSMENT
Week 1:
SMSC When working in the classroom be tolerant of others.
In my classwork I will:Learn about different mechanism and how to create movement using slide mechanisms, levers, linkages and rotary mechanisms by creating models. Produce 4 accurate working examples of mechanisms. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Introduction to Mechanisms, forces and motion. Care when spelling the correct words.
Week 2:
SMSC Avoid wasting any of the materials used in class.
In my classwork I will: Using the research material provided I will investigate and then make some prototypes of card mechanisms. Continuation of making the 4 working examples. SMSC Avoid wasting any of the materials used in class. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Describe 3 different types of mechanisms in the home.
Week 3:
In my classwork I will:In today’s lesson I will complete the making of my 2 card mechanism toys by accurately planning/drawing and cutting out the mechanism parts. I will then self-assess the final outcomes. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Mechanism task-sheet. Extension add other mechanisms.
Week 4 –
In my classwork I will:I will learn about how gears are used to drive machines and change the direction of mechanisms. I will also experimentwith a pulley to see how they are used to lift large weights. SMSC Simple mechanisms are used in under developed countries for extracting water from a well. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Describe the meaning of the words, Bridge, Viaduct and Causeway
Week 5 –
In my classwork I will: Learn about what a structure are both natural and manufactured structures and their different categories such as solid, frame and shell. Identify and learn where in the world there are some famous structures. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Draw 2 different types of structures and show a method of strengthening them.
Week 6 –
In my classwork I will: Learn about methods to strengthen structures such as triangulation. Then working in teams design and make a load bearing structure which will be tested to destruction.
SMSC There is a moral obligation for designers to make safe buildings. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Complete the Making assessment task.
Week 7-
In my classwork I will: Building on my prior knowledge on how to strengthen a structure I will create 2/3 ideas for the construction of a structure using paper straws, card and glue. The structure design should be as strong as possible using the limited amount of materials provided.
SMSC When working in a group listen and value the opinions of others. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Sketch methods of strengthening your straw structure.
Week 8-
In my classwork I will:Use the final idea and parts list created in last week’s lesson start the construction of the straw structure using the materials provided.
SMSC Avoid wasting any of the materials used in class. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / Draw a famous structure that uses the frame construction method and show in detail how it is strengthened
Week 9 –
In my classwork I will:During the lesson a competition will be held to see which group has constructed the strongest structure. Each structure will be weight tested to destruction. A bullet point evaluation carried out on each team’s structure. / Numeracy- Fraction, Decimal, Percentage Equivalance
Literacy- Apostrophes / End of module
